Fill in your holes! These 4 hatchlings were found by Holmes Beach Code Enforcement this morning. They were stuck in the hole using up energy they need for their long swim to the floating sargassum line where they will spend the next few years. You can prevent this! Fill in your holes and spread the word that by filling our holes and leaving the beach flat, we can all help share the beach with sea turtles!
[The officer called AMITW at 1-941-301-8434 to report the hatchlings and they were safely released to the Gulf]
Sea Turtle Nesting Update:
Green turtles are keeping our nesting surveyors particularly busy this year - and their peak nesting season hasn't arrived yet!
The preliminary statewide totals as of June 30th are as follows:
🥚 88,712 loggerheads nests (72,840 in 2022)
🥚 22,547 green turtle nests (10,455 in 2022)
🥚 1,613 leatherback nests (1,690 in 2022)
🥚 11 confirmed Kemp’s ridleys nests (8 in 2022)
Each year, our Sea Turtle Nesting Team helps lead an incredible effort to monitor sea turtle nesting throughout the state to collect valuable data on species that routinely nest on Florida’s beaches. Thanks to all the FWRI partners involved in an outstanding community science effort to document sea turtle nesting activity statewide!
Please report sea turtles that are sick, injured, dead, entangled or are in danger to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline (888-404-3922).
