The website will take you directly to the Brushy Creek Community Center page for our Sunday training signups!
ATX Elite Hoops just successfully finished it’s first 3-day camp for 4th-7th graders! What a great turnout with over 16+ kids signed up! Each day we worked on the fundamentals of basketball and had lots of fun with the game. At this age, we want the kids to start taking a deeper interest in basketball so that they can start laying down the foundation for the future. Whether it’s competitive ball or just cardio runs, we want to give every kid a chance at basketball. We’re looking forward to running another camp in the future!
Ishaan is our player of the month! Incredible talent, great at attacking the basket and throwing dimes, but most importantly a drive to compete like no other. He’s got a future in this game, and we’re here to help him get there.
Nah... this kid (in middle school!) is different. Past week we’ve been working on improving both hands for layups and passing with these drills. By doing lay up lines and dribbling two balls we are practicing being able to throw a behind the back pass, one handed bounce, or finishing to the basket while being comfortable being uncomfortable. These drills weren’t done perfect, but that’s exactly what drives us. I dare y’all to try it yourself.
Can you dribble the ball with a friend while bouncing a tennis ball to each other at the same time? That’s right... our 4th grade athletes can. This will allow our athletes to be more comfortable with their ball control and the use of the off hand.
In this drill we’re trying to work on a variety of skills back to back. In basketball you have to be able to adapt to any shot opportunities given to you. The more you’re moving, the more opportunities you’ll have for shots from different spots of the floor. Don’t forget the midrange folks!!
In this drill, we have one of our star hoopers dribbling with 2 balls and then attacking the basket for a layup on both the left and right sides. The difficulty in this drill comes with having to pick up the second ball and bringing it with you for a layup. This drill works on reaction time, body control, balance, and forcing the athlete to tuck the ball in while finishing on both sides of the basket. Great work!
Here we have our athlete learning to dribble between the legs. In an effort to build handles, we believe in making our clients embrace the awkwardness and even feel a little uncomfortable while dribbling to develop better control of the ball long-term. The more out of control today, the more in control tomorrow.
Slowly getting into the importance of footwork in the post. Stay tuned. 👀
Starting the partnership with Brushy Creek strong! This past week we worked on trying to improve our lateral quickness and overall movement with the basketball while also maintaining the mental space to be able to focus on task at hand.
Different objects were called for the athletes to attack to while the coaches tried to manipulate the athletes multi-sensory functioning. At the end, a fast break layup was completed
Big part of basketball is mental. You control your mind, you can control the game. Remember that!
ATX Elite Hoops wants to give a big THANKS to all that purchased a t-shirt! As promised, we took 5 dollars from each shirt sold and were able to buy all this stuff for the local Round Rock Children’s Home. We’re grateful to be building our business within our community but believe in the importance of giving back to those around us. Thank you for your support — we are looking forward to our next t-shirt drop which will be supporting another charity! 🏀
Meet the coaches:
Hello, my name is Justin Goocher. I was born and raised in Round Rock, TX. I have lived in the Brushy Creek area since elementary school, but recently bought a house in Hutto with my wife. I am a middle school teacher and have worked at the Brushy Creek Community Center for over 10 years.
What does basketball mean to Coach Justin?
To me, basketball has been much larger than a game. Basketball has started a majority of my friendships. The skills of determination, teamwork, and perseverance were taught on the court, but is now something I use everyday off the court. Coach Usman and I met playing basketball at the Brushy Creek Community Center back in middle school — life always comes around full circle.
All time favorite player:
My all time favorite player is LeBron James. When speaking on players that have retired, it’s not fair for me to rank them or judge them when I simply didn’t watch them play growing up. To me, LeBron is the complete package when it comes to running an offense and he is the ultimate competitor.
Top 5 active players:
LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards
Just a quick clip of Arav, our 4th grade athlete who showed up in 50 degree weather last weekend to work on his game! Here he is working on multi-tasking by dribbling and catching a tennis ball. This helps to improve the handles and hand/eye coordination.
Meet the Coaches:
Hi my name is Usman Mahmood and I was born in Houston, Texas but grew up within the Brushy Creek Community. I currently work as a Hardware Engineer at a tech company but in my free time I love playing ball and teaching sports!
What does basketball mean to Coach Usman?
To me, basketball has always been more than just a game. It helped me build discipline as I began to develop my skills, was a great way to meet friends, and most of all, it gave me the confidence both on and off the court.
Coach Usman’s all time favorite player:
My favorite player of all time is Allen Iverson. As an undersized guard he still developed into one of the best guards ever. Also he had one of the best crossovers in the game!!
Coach Usman’s top 5 active players:
James Harden, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, & Giannis Antetokounmpo
Welcome to the -- BALL edition!!
This week we wanted to bring on a classic from Squid Game and incorporate it into learning basketball. We played green light/red light in which our students would rush to the other side of the court while picking up certain objects assigned to them individually. This helped in body control, learning to multi task instructions, keeping our dribbling intact while moving at different speeds, and using the off-hand to pick up objects and navigating through others. Great new drill!!
Here’s a look at our ATX Elite Hoops merch in action out on the basketball court. Want to snag a shirt for yourself? We’re selling them for only $20 and $5 from each shirt will be donated to the Round Rock Children’s Home. Support our small local business by making a purchase today! Orders need to be in by Friday and shirts will go out next week. Send me a message to get one for yourself.

Today we have our clients working on attacking the basket by getting crafty.
1st clip: We practice moving the ball high and then low to get them used to moving the ball to avoid defenders from sliding a hand in and knocking the ball.
2nd clip: We add some defense into the drives to force the offensive players to control the tempo of their drives. Slowing down and getting crafty is just as important as speeding up.
3rd clip: We start implementing these same drives off the dribble. It’s important to go low when attacking the basket and then coming back up when completing the drive. Learning to use the defenders’ body to attack the rim.
Wow Yuki Miyamoto, Jose and Ani have shown huge growth over the years. Super proud of them and their commitment to the program.
Our athletes are back in training! Check out one of our athletes working on his hand-eye coordination while doing various dribbling skills. This includes keeping the ball low while looking up as we use our fingers to display random numbers which the athlete is expected to verbally call out while dribbling. The second video shows our student dribbling with two basketballs to make sure both the left and right hand are in control at all times.
Parents,
Based on the positive feedback from our last challenge, we’ve decided to offer our second challenge to kick-start your week!

Parents,
We hope everyone is doing well! I hope everyone enjoyed our videos from last week and got a good training session in. We’d love to see our athletes working on the drills and challenges and even possibly post it on our Facebook, so please email us if you have videos!
This week we decided to make it more fun. Here’s a challenge video!

I know these times can be boring for the kids so we’re hoping this helps motivate them to stay active and have some fun in doing so!
All the best,
Coach Justin & Coach Usman
ATX Elite Hoops Challenge! Our challenge has 4 drills to be completed as fast as possible: 1) 10 dribbles with each hand: 0:12 - 10 right handed - 10 left handed 2) 3 dribbles between ...
Every shot I take is closer to perfection
Hello everyone,
Out of an abundance of caution, ATX Elite Hoops has decided to suspend all training sessions until further notice. Coach Usman and I have recorded training videos which we will be sending to our clients on weekly basis in order to maintain a sense of normalcy during these uncertain times. We hope these videos will encourage our athletes to continue working on their craft and promote their love for basketball.
We appreciate your loyalty and look forward to seeing all of our athletes again in the future!
Stay safe,
Coach Justin & Coach Usman
Check out our athletes working on both balance and dribbling this week! In the first clip, you will see our seventh-grade athlete working on balancing on one foot while using the ladder. He is simultaneously catching a specific color on the that Coach Usman calls out, which works on both hand-eye coordination and exercises cognitive development.
In our second clip, our second-grade athlete, who is only in his second session with us, is developing the skill to be able to dribble with two basketballs. This shows that he can maintain control with both the left and right hand which will make game-time dribbling seem much easier.
Parents,
Please check your email before heading out to your basketball sessions tomorrow just in case we have to cancel because of the weather. We will make the call by 7am.
Also, if COVID-19 (Coronavirus) is of a concern to you and your child, you may push back your training sessions until you a ready to return. Otherwise, Coach Usman and I will be out there ready to go!
Thanks,
Coaches
Shout out to Jose who has stuck around with us from the start and has always brought great energy. While other kids were watching cartoons, Jose was showing up at 8 am on Saturdays to try to work on his game. He’s come a long way and we’re so proud. Anyone with that kind of heart will always be a hooper.

During this session, we worked on drills that helped in attacking the basket and carried this over into our end of day 2v2 scrimmage.
Check out our middle school athletes working on ball control using agility ladders. The first clip shows great ball control from one hand to the other. Notice the shift in her upper body when she transitions the ball from one hand to the other while also keeping the ball outside of her feet.
In the second clip, you’ll see our athlete dribbling in-sync while hitting each square inside each ladder section, with the ladders not being aligned evenly. This requires a lot of control with both sides of the body and focusing on the task at hand.
Interested in learning more about our training sessions? Send us an email and we’d be happy to send you some information!
Here’s one of our 2nd grade athletes working on the fundamentals of footwork, ultimately trying to improve his quick first step. It’s important to work on both the right and left sides -- to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
Check out this drill our 2nd and 4th grade athletes are working on – they’re building hand-eye coordination while maintaining control of the ball in a dynamic setting. For more information about ATX Elite Hoops training sessions, please email [email protected] or “like” our ATX Elite Hoops page!
