Home Buying Tip: Avoid having multiple Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) fees showing on your bank statements. Rest assured, a bounced check, or a minor overdraft here or there will not hurt your mortgage application. However, multiple and excessive NSF and overdraft fees may be considered as “financial mis-management,” and can be grounds for denial for FHA, VA or Rural Development financing. Many checking account statements will show the total NSF charges acquired over the course of the year. When these NSF charges start to exceed, several hundred dollars to a $1,000 or more, many underwriters may be weary of signing off on FHA, VA & RD loan approvals. Multiple NSF fees (or overdraft fees) will be perceived as an even bigger challenge for approval if the Buyer does not have a prior rental history and/or does not have any established savings pattern, while planning to get all of their down payment from gift funds
