From “The Body Keeps the Score” by Bessel van der Kolk on dealing with hyperarousal…
“Some 80% of the fibers of the vagus nerve (which connects the brain with many internal organs) are afferent; that is, they run from the body into the brain. This means we can directly train our arousal system by the way we breathe, chant, and move, a principle that has been utilized since time immemorial in places like China and India, and in every religious practice that I know of, but that is suspiciously eyes as ’alternative’ in mainstream culture.”
In this podcast by Professor Kate Bowler she interviews Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of “The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma.”
At the end of the interview they discuss neuro-imaging studies of individuals diagnosed with PTSD showing that Broca’s Area (language center of the brain) “went offline” during flashbacks.
Kate Bowler summarizes this so beautifully saying,
“Yes, some horrors are indescribable. Our bodies and brains are unable to find the words to make sense of what we experienced.”

What are my goals for The Centre?
- I want people to feel seen as people and human beings, not a diagnosis
- I want to provide a safe space for people to address pain in whatever form they notice it - physical, emotional.
- I want people to know that therapy is “theirs” and they have control
- I want people to know that there is no power differential between “client” and “therapist.” I am just the other human being in the room.
- I want people to understand that healing happens with connection. If a person does not feel a connection or does not feel comfortable with me as a therapist I feel it is my ethical responsibility to help them find a therapist or provider they can connect with.

Monday I had the privilege to participate in “The Invitation of Pain” led by psychologist Hillary McBride and author and coach Ruthie Lindsey.
The main point of focus: what if instead of fighting pain - physical, emotional, etc - we invite pain and ask what it is trying to tell us. They referenced Dr. Ron Siegel who suggests “pain is information.” So what is it telling us?
Dr. McBride also addressed fear in this in regard. As a researcher and counselor who specializes in trauma she explained the purpose of fear and the necessity for it. She encourages her clients to invite fear in and ask what it’s purpose is - what is it trying to tell us?
I’ll be posting more about this training on this site as just hearing and reading the information was powerful for me so I hope others can benefit as well.
