The City of Omaha 2025 budget once again opens with "According to Indian legend, the name means "upstream" or "against the current".

This language to describe *translation* is not only reductive but insulting to Umoⁿhoⁿ, Ponca, and Degihan-speaking people. It treats native people as a monolith, and it delegitimizes an entire family of languages.

There is a lot to say about this year's budget proposal (see Strongly Worded Letters for more), but we could at least start by demanding this small change to acknowledge the people whose land we live on and not treat their language as a vague legend.

We haven't posted in a while, but we're still here, still working with the community.

We're really bad at social media, but going to start trying to make more of an effort

Operation: Soup for My Family is back on track! We resumed our distributions last weekend and it was a success.

Last week, we partnered with UNMC College of Medicine’s American Medical Association students and with 18 volunteers, we were able to make 96 meals with snacks and drinks, gathered about 25 coats, and lots of hand warmers!! This weekend, we will be distributing downtown in hopes to reach some folks who are not sheltered as well.

As always— we are a volunteer-run group and appreciate any contribution. Venmo , or DM us if you have gloves, sweaters, and coats in good condition that you just don’t like anymore!

Tomorrow, May 19th, McDonald's and other service industry workers across the United States are striking to protest for a $15 per hour minimum wage and union rights. Along with Wal-Mart, McDonald's has the highest number of workers on Medicaid and food stamps, despite making $4.73 billion in profit in 2020.

Do not cross the picket line tomorrow. Don't go to McDonald's or any other business that pays their workers starvation wages. The world depends on the working class to function. All workers deserve to lead happy, fulfilled lives. They should not be struggling pay check to pay check to feed their families. Workers of the world, unite! ✊

Folks, the conditions outside are deadly. This is the kind of weather that claims fingers and toes by frostbite, and some of our neighbors in the street won't survive through these nights due to hypothermia.

Now more than ever, we need winter clothes. Hats, earmuffs, sweaters, coats, thermal underwear, gloves, mittens, thick pants/jeans, warm socks, and boots are all items we are actively needing. If you have any of these items to donate, please DM us.

Edit: We accept monetary donations through Venmo, Cashapp, and Paypal at .

Comrades over at FTP are having 2 distros this Saturday. For anyone. Please spread the word!

Photos from Omaha Street Medics's post 01/02/2021

We distributed a record number of 119 meals this afternoon, along with hot coffee/hot chocolate, eggs, HUNDREDS of bread stuff, and a trunk full of clothes.

Please keep sending clothes and stuff our way. Right now we're needing clothes and shoes that are 2-3X for both men and women. Also needing shoes sizes 10-14, both men and women!

Venmo/Cashapp/paypal:

Everything goes to the houseless and/or anybody who needs it, no questions asked.

[ID: Pic 1 and 2 of bags and bags of bagels but those weren't even all the bagels we brought. Also had visual of cups for coffee and hot chocolate. Comrades !!! 🙏🙏🙏

Alert! Alert! We have some pretty exciting news to share! Starting next weekend, February 6th, we will be expanding our monthly food distribution program to an additional location. In addition to our regular distribution in Gifford Park from 11-12, we will be holding a distribution in the Park Ave neighborhood from 1-2. We are super greatful to the inCommon Community Development organization for hosting us at their community center on Park Ave. We look forward to serving more neighborhoods and more communities in the city.

We will be sharing flyers for both distributions in the days to come. In the meantime, as always, if you are interested in getting involved, please reach out by messaging the page. And if you'd like to contribute to our mission by donating food or money, you can also message the page, or use our PayPal link: paypal.me/FTPOMA.

We're still distributing! Last Sunday we did Kidney bean curry + Rice, and Potato + Bacon Soup. That curry smelled soooo good. 🥲🥲🥲. This past Wednesday we had and broccoli cheddar soup. Still deciding the menu for this Sunday's distro.

We've been distributing 100-150 meals per week along with coffee, snacks, cold items, and meet some special requests from houseless folks we've met throughout the weeks and now have a relationship (i.e. a bath and body works perfume for one lady, a bath towel for another pal, etc.) Since we work out of donations, the availability of our resources are variable, but we try our best! We also drive around doing street outreach, but very small scale right now.

To participate in helping feed the houseless with us: venmo/cashapp would help us buy items in bulk (handle is OmahaStreetMedics for both). We also distribute clothing items that are clean and in good condition.
