Posted @withregram • @milkmatterspt As the rise in a desire to breastfeed babies has been seen in recent years, naturally there’s a corresponding rise in the diagnosis of tongue ties. We are finding them because moms want to figure out why they can’t nurse instead of just giving up. 🤱In the 1970’s, 3 million babies were born and only 20% nursed. 🤱Now, 5 million babies are born and ~80 % nurse. 🤱With the resurgence of breastfeeding, ankyloglossia is being discovered more. So many of the parents I see have been to several providers before finally confirming a diagnosis. Many parents concerns are invalidated, dismissed and frankly it not only delays the diagnosis, but also jeopardizes the breastfeeding relationship. Here is the harsh reality: The healthcare professionals claiming this ‘fad’ are the same healthcare professionals that are not trained in how to properly evaluate and recognize a tongue or lip tie. The proper way to diagnose a tie is through a physical examination. A trained provider needs to palpate the frenulum in conjunction with observing difficulties and understanding the compensations a baby may exhibit. Trust your mommy instinct. Find someone who is knowledgeable in ankyloglossia. Don’t suffer silently. It is NOT a fad. It is a real thing and there are answers.
