Limit of disturbance (LOD) had to be widened due to the need for a drill rig to put in a new water line. We adjusted the tree preservation line by removing two small trees (5" DBH Prunus serotina and 4" DBH Diospyros virginiana) and some invasive plants (Rosa multiflora). We root pruned the new LOD line and spread chips and hardwood mulch along the line. Minimal impact to canopy cover and tree preservation area. Hazardous trees were left as wildlife spars. Why leave a wildlife habitat spar? By leaving a portion of the tree behind, we are creating a habitat spar or wildlife spar. The idea is that the remaining tree will become a habitat for different kinds of wildlife such as birds, small mammals, insects, and even certain types of amphibians and reptiles. This removes the potential hazard to humans/property and retains wildlife habitat.

Robinia pseudoacacia (Black Locust) natural snag.

Many animals make their homes in or on snags, including birds, bats, small mammals, snakes, and invertebrates. Snags are extremely important structural elements in forested habitats, and may make up the entire habitat of some creatures, like insects.

Leaving natural snags where they pose no threat to human activity or property is good for keeping or enhancing wildlife habitat. Dead trees can also be left as snags as opposed to removing the whole tree which also will help promote more wildlife habitat.

A few issues with these trees (about 15 trees) planted on a beautiful lot.
1. Planted too high. Air spade lowered soil and mulch line on trunks 5 to 10 inches.
2. Over mulching. The trees have been overmulched for years.
3. Compacted soil on the root ball.

Reducing the height of soil and mulch on top of the tree adjacent to the trunk, and spreading the soil and mulch away from the tree to reduce the depth. On the trees that were planted really too high, we pushed the soil further out towards the extent of the canopy to create a better soil for feeder and adventurous roots. The further away from the roots the grass line is the better.

Trees that have to be removed for this project are climbed or carefully felled not to damage trees to be preserved. All the chipped material stays on site to be utilized for the access road.
Logs will be utilized in this project or another local project as stream structures. Reuse and recycle material. Lower carbon footprint.
