My traumatic memories came back all at once this week - The time I randomly got called a "Chinese monkey" when I stepped in to block a random stranger from approaching too close to my sister; the time I got inappropriately approached and touched by a complete stranger who "always wanted to have a baby with an Asian girl"; the time I got called a "stuck up" because I would not engage in an Asian fetish-driven conversation that a random guy initiated. The list goes on.
Racism against Asians has existed around the world, including Canada, for centuries and I too have been victimized. I knew that what I have experienced is wrong but I also thought it was "part of the package" to live in this country.
Someone asked me if I truly believed that racism and Asian fetishization should come as part of the package. And you know what? These shouldn’t.
You can't ignore what is happening now and perceive it as "their" problem. We have all taken part of this, whether as a victim, as a bystander, or as a perpetrator. This is "our" problem that we all have to solve together.
As promised, Maison Cevanne donated to the family of Hyun Jung Kim, one of the victims of the recent shooting in Atlanta (GoFundMe - In memory of HyunJungKim to support my brother & I - https://gofund.me/6653b648).
But we expanded our scope and also made donations to directly support:
- the elderly lady who successfully beat up her attacker on SF's Market Street (GoFundMe - Help my grandmother recover from this trauma - https://gofund.me/d4977bce)
- Ngoc Pham, an 83 year old Vietnamese gentleman who was shopping for groceries when he got attacked (GoFundMe - Ngoc Pham Fundraiser - https://gofund.me/bd7184bd)
We have also made donations to various organizations, including:
- AAPI Community Fund (GoFundMe - Support the AAPI Community Fund - https://gofund.me/08aaaa58)
- Asian American Federation (GoFundMe - : Support AAF - https://gofund.me/8c1dbde8)
- AAPI Women Lead (https://www.imreadymovement.org/donate)
What is important is what happens going forward and preventing these tragic events from happening again. So please educate yourself, make donations and show your support.
