I believe mindfulness can vastly improve our own wellbeing as well as make us more productive members of our organization - a true win-win. Since 2019 it's been my mission to share what I know about mindfulness with my fellow associates at CarMax and I am so thrilled to see how this initiative has grown and our mindfulness community has blossomed. Great day with great people!! ❤️
Equanimity is an attentional skill related to composure and resilience. It can be strengthened through formal contemplative practices, artistic efforts, and the ways we respond to the moment-by-moment experience of being alive.
When we try to understand it conceptually, we confuse it with passivity, complacency, and indifference.
When we understand it viscerally, we discover it's the opposite of apathy and emotional suppression.
Meditation teacher Shinzen Young describes it as a trainable attentional capacity for relating to sensations and perceptions in a “balanced state of non-self-interference.”
It is related to acceptance with one significant distinction.
When we talk about acceptance, we're usually talking about accepting situations.
When we cultivate equanimity, we practice noticing our real-time perceptions (closely, briefly) without trying to change them.
Cultivating equanimity isn't about condoning the behaviors of others or ourselves. It's not about giving up.
It's about learning to live more fully even in the midst of uncertainty and discomfort.
As Shinzen frames it, "Equanimity is the on-demand ability, when it is appropriate, to let sense and nonsense, physical and emotional pleasure and pain come and go, to have these sensory experiences congeal and melt without preference.
Having the skill of equanimity doesn’t mean that’s all you ever do just because you have that ability.
Equanimity should never be confused with indifference to circumstances. You can absolutely take a stand.
Regarding sensory experience, you can reject negative thoughts or selectively attend to positive content.
Regarding external circumstances, the ability to not interfere with the way the world makes you feel frees up energy to take a stand and make the world a better place."

“In addition to the Headspace app, CarMax offers a mindfulness training program created by a technology employee [that’s me!] that offers onsite and remote employees the chance to take classes on various mindfulness techniques and topics, including using mindfulness to cope with post-pandemic stress. Some 350 CarMax employees have participated in the program”

One of the best ways for me to practice loving kindness in life is something that I heard that the Dalai Lama does, which is to look at everyone you meet as if they were an old friend. Just try this as a practice. Feels awesome!

An insight that came up from my practice today;
Often we rush because of a subtle sense that this moment isn’t good enough. We want to get through it to the better moments. When there’s a momentum of mindfulness, we naturally can slow down. There’s no hurry. This moment, whatever it consists of, is just fine. There’s no better moment ahead that I need to push this one away for. We can find peace and fulfillment right here and now.
We're in day 2 of Immersion! I'm loving this deep dive into Unified Mindfulness. If you have any time to drop in, either to do some lightly guided meditation, silent sits, mindful movement, or the brilliant workshops on practical applications of mindfulness, please use this link to sign up so you can get the Zoom room links!

Enjoying my Continuation Day
Continuation Day
"The day you call your birthday is really a day to remember your continuation. Every day you are alive is a continuation day. Within your body, birth and death are always taking place. We are coming into existence and going out of existence at every moment of our life. When you scratch or scrub yourself, dry skin is flaked off and new skin cells are born. In the time it takes you to read this paragraph, thousands of cells will have died. But there are so many, you do not have time to organize funerals for them. At the same time, thousands of new cells have been born, but it would be impossible to organize birth certifications. Every day you transform. Some part of you is been born and some part is dying."

In January I offered a 30 day mindfulness challenge to my CarMax colleagues. 143 associates participated, making it the largest event I’ve ever run.
Feedback was incredible, with people reporting it was “life-changing”, and the “best meditation program they had ever experienced”.
CarMax even recognized me with the prestigious “CarMax Champion” award for my work on this challenge and other mindfulness coaching work at CarMax.
I’m now proud to offer this same 30 day challenge content to the public as a free course on my website. There are 30 days of short written lessons and 30 short guided meditations (about 5 minutes per day). I hope you’ll check it out.
