“I didn't know I wanted to be an engineer because I never considered I would be smart enough. In 2019, I was just another cashier for Walmart, someone who scraped together enough D's and C's and barely got their high school diploma. I was extremely unhappy with life and disappointed in the person I was. I felt like a nobody who contributed nothing. Just as I began job hunting, COVID-19 made the world stop, and I decided to use that time to take care of myself, physically and mentally.

By 2021, I was getting help in therapy from a wonderful woman, working out my issues and childhood trauma. She thought I was brilliant and told me that I should give college a try; maybe school could help me figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I told her I barely survived high school. There was no way I could try college. For six months, she hounded me until I gave in and finally applied to Yuba College. I was registered to take all the beginner courses in subjects I was terrible at, including Math-101: Elementary Algebra, the bottom of the barrel for math. I remember being scared I'd fail because I wasn't smart enough and embarrassed that someone in their late 20s, almost 30, was going back to school with a bunch of 18-year-olds.

That was three years ago, and this spring, I am graduating with an associate in mathematics and natural science with Honors. I want to be an Engineer because, like my life, I want to focus all my energy on improving my home and give it a future that I can contribute meaningfully. I chose electrical engineering to work with renewable energy. I am going to Sacramento State University not just for a bachelor's but for my master's degree to make a real impact in my field. I will learn how to become an Electrical Engineer, one of the most challenging college majors because I am intelligent, and that's what smart people do.”

Ashely, we are of you!

"I’m Eleena and I’m a sociology major! I’ll be receiving an Associates of Arts-Transfer degree in sociology. I will be attending CSU Chico in the fall. I have been an English tutor at the WLDC for over a year now. I’m a part of EOPS as a first gen student! I come from a Mexican, Filipino, and Hawaiian background. My career goal is to be an advocate for marginalized communities.

My advice I’d give to students is to be open to new experiences because they help affirm your path or lead you to an entirely new one. Also, mistakes do not hinder your success or potential in life. Lastly, don’t be afraid to occupy space that’s meant for you. Take risks, get involved, and follow your passions!

I’d like to thank the WLDC for giving me my first long term job that’s been so accepting and encouraging! I couldn’t have asked for a better work experience and getting to know such amazing fellow tutors and staff! Big thanks to Riley and Darla because their support brought me out of my shell and helped me progress as a student and tutor!

I’d like to give a grand shout out to my family who’s always supported me through my academic journey. My mom helped me apply to Yuba College and now she gets to see me walk for my associates. My parents worked exceptionally hard to get me where I’m at. They are my biggest supporters and who I look up to most when I need to persevere and keep going. As a first gen student, I couldn’t be prouder to further my education. I’d love to give my family name an official degree and maybe even a masters!"

Eleena, we are of you!
