Spotlight on LC Paralegal Alumni 🤩:

Rebekah (Becky) Mapes was the 2020 Paralegal Student of the Year Lewis and Clark Community College alumni. She works at Unsell, Schattnik and Phillips, P.C. where she began her career immediately after completing her internship in the LCCC paralegal program. She was hired and started work under the leadership of the current owner and president of the firm, Erin M. Phillips. She works directly with Erin Phillips, Partner Bradley C. Young, and Associate Sarah J. Lukas. Becky is the lead paralegal for workers’ compensation cases representing Petitioners. Her ability to identify complex issues, determine relevant case law, and effectively review medical record details and facts of a case has provided indispensable insight to her firm, allowing them to efficiently resolve claims.

Becky accredits the LCCC paralegal program for the skills and insight she was able to learn early in her career which jump-started her advancement at her employer. Throughout the program, she learned software use, preparation of legal documents, legal research and application, and a range of various types of law.

“I worked 2 jobs during my time at LCCC. The paralegal program has always been ahead of the curve with its online class options. I was able to complete the program at a pace that worked for me and my schedule. I would take Tuesdays off from both jobs to study and review materials, complete my work online, and take my exams that same day. The program introduces real lawyers, real paralegals, and real judges to teach you real-world insights into the career. I directly learned legal research and writing from a licensed, practicing attorney. The program prepares you to immediately enter into the job market and provides you with a skill set that you can apply to any law office.” – Becky Mapes (Unsell, Schattnik & Phillips, P.C.)

HeplerBroom has wonderful things to say about our paralegal program and students!

“Over the last several years we have recruited and hired directly from LCCC and the Paralegal Program resulting in some of our best team members. When we receive applications with credentials from the program, we put more weight on them because we know the quality of the program and students who graduate from it. The students have a great foundation of knowledge and processes of the legal system that help them tremendously in the positions here. They are well-organized, detailed, and have a passion and eagerness to learn and grow in the field. This is always exciting and appreciated from an employer’s standpoint. The students also have great work ethic and a level of professionalism that we don’t see in other candidates. Those that we’ve hired from your program have had quick success in their roles, and they take on additional responsibilities or special projects. I believe this is a direct result from their experience in the program. HeplerBroom will continue to seek out and recruit directly with LCCC and their quality paralegal program.” - Laura Downing, HelperBroomLLC

A quote from one of the program OGs!

“I was one of the first to graduate from the program when it was first offered. I cannot say enough good things about it! I felt supported from start to finish. I loved that the classes were taught by local attorneys and I felt I learned a lot from them. I am in my 16th year as a paralegal and I can still call on Becky Gockel for advice and help in my career. It’s the best decision I ever made.” - Erica Wallace (Keith Short and Associates, P.C.)

16/05/2024

“I found the paralegal program at LCCC at a time of transition. I had always been interested in the legal world but knew I didn't have the drive or money for a legal degree. Rebecca was so supportive and wonderful to work with from the very beginning. Doing the 30 and out program allowed me to do all of my paralegal classes online. The classes were so well structured and the professors were always just an email or phone call away. The support I received is as much the reason I am where I am today as the education I received. If you are thinking about a paralegal degree or even just taking a couple classes I cannot recommend this program and these professors enough.” - Catharine Camero (Littler Mendelson Law Firm)

If you’re a current student or graduate of the Paralegal Program, we would love to hear your opinion about the education you received at LC!

Our graduates are getting glowing reviews and so is our program!

“I cannot say enough good things about your Paralegal Program at Lewis and Clark. I hired one of your graduates last year and she is a rock star. She was ready to work from the first day. She not only knew what help was needed, but also anticipated issues that showed a level of sophistication in the legal field. Now she is one of my go-to resources in the office. She is great with my clients and her co-workers. Thanks again for helping her achieve her goals. I am lucky she landed in my office.
Keep up the great work!” - Dave Fahrenkamp, Attorney (Law Office of David M. Fahrenkamp)

Way to glow, Audrey!!!

Have you heard what former graduates are saying about Lewis & Clark’s paralegal program?

“As a single mother who was also working full-time, LCCC’s paralegal program was flexible enough for me to excel and graduate with honors and as paralegal student of the year. I was able to find an amazing employer and am so proud to have chosen this path.” - Brittany Mundy (Paralegal, Simmons Conroy Hanly LLC)

“It was absolutely a springboard into the paralegal field regardless of the area of law.” - Nicole Ezeagu (The Stephan Law Firm)

What students are saying about LC’s paralegal program!

Jasmine Akers (current student) says, “I was attracted to the thirty and out program to couple with my current degree, BSC, Political science. So far, the program has already landed my first interview with a law firm. I love the acceleration part, 8 week courses! The courses are easy to manage especially having the online option. The online formation helps balance between work and family for those with extra responsibilities. There are always interesting parts of classes. The assignments prepare you for the law firms’ expectations. The professors, Becky Gockel and Jerrold Burkhart, are very resourceful with guidance on assignments. Becky is also amazing at keeping up with job postings for this field. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone wanting to get closer to the knowledge in the field of law.”
