Words of wisdom for National Preparedness Month
Continuing September’s preparedness month.
If a natural disaster occurs in your area, and you have to vacate your home, are you prepared? Here are some things to think about prior to that happening.
If time is of the essence, you must be prepared. To be prepared, you must have a plan…. Here is a brief game plan you might want to use. Add or subtract as needed. Everyone’s plan will be different, this is just a short guide covering a broad spectrum of considerations.
1. You must understand When it is appropriate to leave your home.( what conditions must be present in order for you to say, “I have to go”.
2. Who is leaving? Kids, pets, do the kids drive or no? Is there adequate transportation? Is it reliable?
3. What will you take with you? Documents, (ss cards, marriage license, passports, deeds, titles etc.) does each member of the house have a dedicated bug out bag? Is it appropriate for any season? ( personally I believe each person should have three dedicated bags, a b.o.b. , a family bag( items and resources shared amongst the family, and a small condensed bag with personal belongings. Will you be taking fuel, water& food?
4. Know where you are going to go… and a detailed plan of how to get there.. communicated to all in the family( think 🤔 K.I.S.S keep it simple stupid) a map with pre planned routes and alternate routes.
5. Communication methods. Cell phone( may or may not be available), ham radios, cb’s, gmrs, walkie talkies, sat phones, garmin in reach with text, smoke signals ( I kid or do I?) sharpies and laminated paper to leave notes to others. Note: it is important to have everyone familiar with the use of what you have as well as attached note cards explaining operation on every device, along with adequate batteries and recharging capabilities.
6.Maps . Not just gps, but actual maps that you have previously identified the following.
A. High threat areas.
B. Possible congestion and high traffic areas.
C. Resource locations ( gas stations, law enforcement, hospitals, grocery stores, hardware stores, auto repair shops etc. Family locations( you would be surprised at how many people can’t remember how to get to cousin eddy’s place who they haven’t seen in 20 years).
7. Cash and cards for each member of your family in case of separation.
8. Dedicated meet up locations. Prioritized by type of event your are in. Identify these on your maps and number them in sequential order from 1 to whatever with the understanding of which to go to first.( the last thing you want is a child 70 miles away from you during a forced evacuation. For example red numbers are in case of fire, blue numbers in case of flood, yellow in case of health hazards ( chemical spill etc.)
Above all else… pay attention to what is going on around you, do not become complacent because you made it through the last hurricane, or earthquake, or blizzard. Use common sense and get out of the way before the herd… just my two cents.
As always
