Happy New Year!

I hope your year is off to a good start! We have a great new semester planned for our Monday semester class. With the calendar this year we'll have 19 weeks of class instead of the usual 17. We still have a few spots left and the age group is 11-16.

While last semester really gave an in-depth study of facial anatomy and perspective, this semester we'll be working with lots of color and expressive types of art making. This will include acrylics, gouache, different types of printmaking and clay. If you're interested in something more expressive, with different ways to make patterns and explore color, this one's for you!

Kitchen Lithography is one of the methods we'll use. Students will learn how to print lithographs using kitchen foil, cola, lemon juice, soap and other readily available (and inexpensive) materials. Kitchen lithography, pioneered by French illustrator Émilion about 15 years ago, has since been developed by other artists around the world, and is great way for anyone who wants to experiment with different types of mark-making and drawing and as a way to understand one printmaking process.

TEEN ART ALCHEMY: A MIXED MEDIA ADVENTURE

I’m so excited to share that two of my students placed 1st for their sculptures in the Middle Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition!! It will take place this month at the Parthenon. I look forward to celebrating them at the awards ceremony.

These are students in my Monday semester class at Monthaven Arts & Cultural Center, Hendersonville It starts again next week at 4:30-6.

They drew inspiration from a Mexican ceramic artist and were asked to create something related to "spring" and using clay and wire, also consider the space around the sculpture as available room to extend the idea out.

The first image is titled:
Sol Biota, 8th grade, 1st place ceramic
the second is: Peter Rabbit and Friends
7th grade, 1st place ceramic

The upcoming class starts next week with only a couple spots left.

The Painter’s Fortune Teller – Mediums 19/12/2023

I was asked about some thoughts on paint materials and what mediums I use for this issue.

The Painter’s Fortune Teller – Mediums By Nancy Rowe While it might seem like Oil Painting 101, I still struggle with understanding and properly using all of the different painting mediums available. I’ve looked up tutorials on YouTube, asked painting instructors, and chatted with artist friends about what they use. I’ve experimented...

Studio — Jessica Lewis 15/11/2023

I’ve been asked a couple times this week what art supplies I would recommend for students and adults for holiday gifts. For younger ones, Crayola is always a great choice and they make most things washable. Beyond that, there are lots of supplies we use in the studio that I love and have used for years. Here is a link to my website with details. I’m also happy to help if you want to message me. I look for things that students can grow into and that will last!

Studio — Jessica Lewis Welcome to my Studio CatalogOften I’m asked what art supplies I use and would recommend, what would be economical, options for students starting out, and what I would recommend for more advanced students. I always try to keep in mind what I think students can use for the long haul and products tha...

🎨 Hi friends! It’s been a full year with so many exciting things happening. As we finish the last bit of this year, I realized I haven’t introduced myself. My name is Jessica and for the past 18 years I've called Nashville my home, where I've been living my dream of creating art every day. 🖌️ My journey has led me on some incredible adventures, from earning a BFA in painting to working as a sculptor and painter at an architectural firm. That work took me all over the country, designing themed areas for amusement parks, resorts, zoos, and museums. It was the most challenging yet rewarding experience, aside from parenthood 😉, and I made lifelong friends along the way.

But my passion for art didn't stop there. I pursued my MFA in painting, and my husband and I eventually settled in Nashville, then just outside. I continued my work at the firm and started taking portrait commissions on the side. As our family grew, I found myself back in the classroom, teaching once more. Growing up, I would always help my mom teach art alongside her during summer workshops or events. It’s an awesome feeling to see students grow and succeed and I learn just as much from them as a teacher!

Fun facts: Creativity runs in the family—my mom is an artist and art teacher so we always had lots of supplies on hand to play with. She is such an out of the box thinker and where I’ve gotten so much of my own creativity from. I’m always thankful for her support and influence.

I may prefer being behind the scenes, but I absolutely love connecting with people and sharing my art. Laughter is my favorite, and I'm a proud mom to a daughter and son. The sweet and funny parts of raising kids reminds me of my own childhood, of things I’ve forgotten. I started painting a series about those memories and things I wanted to make sure to remember. It’s an honor to do the same for other families and create heirlooms that will be cherished for generations.

Stay tuned as I share my artistic journey and the joy it brings me! 🎉

Another one wrapping up today. Three new pieces coming together this week.

Small 4x6 color studies are a great way to warm for a painting and help understand your palette. I always love the simplicity and broken color!
