If you've ever opened a checking account, then you've most likely had an inquiry on your Chex report. ChexSystems is another consumer reporting agency specializing in deposit account information. You're entitled to a free copy of your report, which will show you what information banks and credit unions are privvy to. There may be opportunities to dispute inaccuracies and improve your ability to obtain deposit accounts as well.

Payment history is critical to a high credit score. Even if you can only afford minimum payments, be sure to pay on time as often as possible.

If you have missed a few payments but are otherwise in good standing, it doesn't hurt to write a "goodwill" letter to ask the creditor to remove the late payment from your credit reports.

Always try to stay under 25% total credit utilization (ideally under 10%). Your score will likely drop if you exceed 25%.
