Mansfield breaks ground on 100-acre entertainment district featuring stadium, concert venue | Fort Worth Report The new destination will feature a 7,000-seat multisport stadium, with plans to open in spring 2026.
We get this question a lot. Yes, working in parks and recreation is quite often *exactly* like the TV show.
The splash pad at McClendon Park West is closed today and possibly tomorrow for a buzzworthy reason. Bear with us on this lengthy, yes we swear it's true despite how un-bee-lievable, explanation.
The creek that runs alongside the park is dry, as is pretty much everything in the area right now (thank you, Texas summer!) and so all of the wildlife is desperately searching for a drink. (We hear you!)
A rather large colony of bees have discovered that the splash pad begins dispensing cool, fresh water each day at 10 a.m. and have declared this the hottest watering hole in town, much to the dismay of Mansfield toddlers who just want to play. Of course, we cannot spray standard insect treatments into the water that our kids are splashing in (and definitely not but maybe/probably drinking.)
What's a Leslie Knope to do?
After consulting with both aquatic and insect experts, we've determined the best, most Pawnee, course of action.
1. The splash pad is closed for a few days to dry out.
2. Pest control treated the nearby landscaping with safe, organic treatments to deter gathering.
3. Parks staff is placing a bucket of watermelon snow cone syrup (yes, you read that correctly...we are not pollen your leg!) a few dozen yards away from the splash pad to lure the bees to a much sweeter spot, away from our little guests.
Fingers crossed, wish us luck, and stay tuned for the updates!
p.s. We know a splash pad closure really stings, especially with another 100-degree week forecasted, but we do have splash pads available at Chandler and Gertie Barrett Parks that are (as far as we know!) completely bee-free!

MANSFIELD, TX – The City of Mansfield begins sole control and responsibility for all Big League Dreams Mansfield park operations beginning Friday, December 1, 2023.
Mansfield City Council voted unanimously on September 11 to terminate the maintenance and operating agreement with Big League Dreams Mansfield, Inc. (BLD) due to a failure to comply with all terms of the agreement. In addition to the failure of BLD to comply with the agreement’s terms, the City received continuous communications from citizens regarding the condition of the facility. The Council and City recognize our commitment to provide our citizens and visitors with remarkable experiences and the facility, in its current condition, no longer aligned with that vision. The sports park, located at 500 Heritage Parkway S., opened in 2008 through a public-private partnership where the City of Mansfield owned the property and BLD operated and maintained the facilities.
The park features eight ball fields, an indoor pavilion, two sports club restaurants, batting cages, a playground, and pro shop. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department has begun assessing the facility to determine its full condition.
All or part of the park will likely be closed in the coming months for a full facility feasibility assessment. The City of Mansfield is allowing the current leagues and tournaments to finish their seasons at the facility through November. Organizations or players with questions about in-progress leagues and tournaments should direct any questions to BLD staff at (817) 539-0700 or [email protected].
The City has made no determination regarding future operations, management and maintenance of Big League Dreams Mansfield. Those conversations will be ongoing as staff completes the full assessment. Any repair or operational contracts for the facility will follow the standard bidding process, which will be announced and handled via traditional formats.
For more information about the future of Big League Dreams Mansfield and this evaluation process, please contact Matt Young, Executive Director of Community Services at [email protected].
