We are soooo excited to announce that The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center will be releasing at least three sea turtles on Oak Island on Monday, May 9th, at 2:30 pm at the SE 49th Street Access. One of the turtles to be released is our very own "Aquamarine," a sea turtle that was hooked on a fishing line off the Ocean Crest Fishing Pier. We were called and were able to transport the turtle to Karen Beasley where the hook was removed and medical attention was given! She is doing great and ready to go home! This is a public, live event in collaboration with The Karen Beasley Center, Caswell Beach Turtle Watch, and our wonderful Town of Oak Island! We hope you will be able to attend! Please, stay behind the barriers, have fun, and help us wish these amazing sea turtles a happy journey home!

Oak Island's Spooktacular Flash Dance- We Need Your Help!
Saturday, October 30th

This year's Spooktacular Event will feature our 2nd Annual Flash Dance (we missed 2020 due to Covid) and are looking for community participation in creating a Flash Mob dancing to the song “Fancy Like” by Walker Hayes.

Spooktacular is a family friendly Halloween event that offers a safe trick or treating alternative; complete with carnival type activities while distributing candy to children ages 13 and under. This year's event will be held in conjunction with Live & Local at Middleton Park on Saturday, October 30th from 6-8pm as we wow and delight coastal kids with the Halloween holiday spirit.

Practices will be held from 3-4pm each Tuesday & Thursday in October at OKI Recreation Center as we lead up to this year's event. Participants do not have to attend, but are welcome to join our less coordinated department members (aka Carrie.....).

Want to practice at home? Use the following link to learn the Fancy Like dance:

For questions, or more information, simply email [email protected] or by calling (910) 278-5518.

Spotting rip currents in the water from ground level can be challenging, even for a well-trained eye. But sometimes the sand is talking to you, you just have to know how to listen.

This little river through the sand between SE 49th and SE 52nd streets actually tells a story. It is not impressive today, and unlikely to cause a rip current. But this same area has been observed in the near past to flow a large amount of water in a circular pattern back into the ocean. When it reaches the ocean, there is a very good chance it will create a rip current as it flows into deeper water. Sometimes the water flowing through the sand itself has a fairly strong current and this would certainly be an indication of its ability to form a rip current.

We are sharing this information to further your understanding about rip currents and what to look out for. Sometimes these little rivers and tidepools are a great place to play in fairly protected waters. Other times they serve as a warning that should not be ignored.

We are flying the yellow flag today for a Moderate rip current risk. Over the next 24 hours, the risk will become extreme. Please stay out of the water.

This morning we read about the loss of a 6 year old boy in Florida who was playing knee deep in the ocean yesterday. They were flying red flags.

Please stay out of the ocean today.

Today we have a Moderate rip current risk, forecasted 3-4 foot surf, with low tide at 11:00 am. Keep in mind that rip currents are far more likely a few hours before and after low tide.

We placed a ❌ above the rip current in this photo. Would you have noticed it without the ❌ and the rip current warning flag?

You have a dark channel, with waves coming ashore to the right and left of the rip. It looks appealing, like a less rough area for the kids to play in, right?

That’s why rip currents are deceptive. Beachgoers see less wave action and assume that is a safer area to swim. Truth is, that calm area is the most deadly thing in the photo.

It has been brought to our attention by several in our community that there have been young children and unlicensed drivers operating golf carts on our streets and walking trail area. We want to remind everyone of the ordinance and that Officers will be stopping and citing those caught operating a golf cart without a driver’s license. Parents or other adults that allow an unlicensed driver to operate the golf cart will also be cited.
