Did you know the McMinnville Winco has monkfruit in the bulk section? It’s a great option if you’d like to try it without purchasing an entire bag! Monkfruit is a sweetener with minimal impact on blood sugar and you don’t have to worry about any tummy issues (like with some other sugar replacements).

Eli Lilly and Company Issues Voluntary Nationwide Recall of One Lot of GLUCAGON® Emergency Kit Due to Loss of Potency 28/10/2021

Take a moment to check your glucagon kits as there is a recall for the following lot number: D239382D
While you're at it, check out Baqsimi- people are much more successful in delivering it (like Narcan) vs. a shot with multiple steps.

Ketogenic diet followed by diabetes patients, despite lack of recommendations, finds study 04/02/2021

Health care practitioners do patients a disservice by minimizing their personal experience. Especially with chronic disease, we should educate about management styles and option pros/cons. Ultimately, the patient has to decide what works best for them.

The original study is in French, but this is a summary of the findings.

Perspective | Five myths about nutrition 05/01/2021

Although myth #1 and #5 are missing a bit of nuance about decision making, I appreciate how this author addresses myths about nutrition that often pop up around this time of year- especially around processed foods. Frozen foods, canned foods, and mechanically processed foods are often cheaper and encourage making meals from home with less effort. https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/five-myths/five-myths-about-nutrition/2020/12/30/a76d691a-49e5-11eb-839a-cf4ba7b7c48c_story.html

Perspective | Five myths about nutrition No, sugar is not “addictive,” and cooking doesn’t destroy the nutrients in your food.

For weekly menu planning, I find a great balance for structure vs. winging it by making a list of 6-7 entrees and starring the ones that need to be made soon. I love feeling creative in the kitchen and not being tied down to a schedule, but having a list to choose from helps reduce food waste and over-shopping.

Do you enjoy getting creative with menu planning? If not, and it's because of a disease, allergy, or a rut, I'd love to help you feel good about the choices you're making.

Comment below what you been making in the kitchen lately that feels creative and fun!

Food labels are being updated this year. The two I'm most excited about?

1. Serving sizes are being updated. In the past, companies have reduced the serving sizes to avoid reporting trans fats or give the illusion a food is more nutritious than it actually is. This should help!

2. Most exciting of all, POTASSIUM is required. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have kidney failure and this will impact their ability to manage their disease drastically.

Oh, and of note- added sugar is now in a separate category from total sugar. We'll see what impacts this has on consumers.

Making changes to the food label is a HUGE burden for small companies, and it should not be taken lightly. My hope is the FDA monitors the financial burden for the country and is able to weigh the public health benefits before making additional changes- such as adding phosphorus to the label!
