2013 was the centenary year of the publication of Danny Boy, which has become one of the best known and loved songs of the twentieth century. Fred Weatherly (1848-1929), barrister and prolific songwriter wrote the words. In 1910, a year of tragedy for him with the deaths of his father and only son within 3 months of each other. He had penned some verses that year but was unable to find suitable music for them. But in 1912, he states in his memoirs, a sister-in-law in America sent him the music of the Londonderry air with a suggestion he might put words to that melody. Fred claimed not have heard this traditional Irish air before but said it was one the most beautiful melodies he had ever come across. With modifications, his 1910 words could be fitted to it and Danny Boy was published by Boosey and Hawkes, in 1913.

In my mind I had this descending left hand bass motif. I created a romantic melody with tinges of nostalgy recalling favorite memories of a revered friendship.

Nocturne in C Minor, a synthesis of East - West cultures and inspired by both the poem ‘Thoughts on A Still Night’ by Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai and the Nocturnes of Chopin.

🌸Written for the animation Spring, Spring's Hope tells the story of a young girl and her faithful companion who have entered the ancient, frozen forest to perform the traditional rites to dispel winter and initiate the arrival of Spring. Using piano, solo strings and orchestra with brass, winds and tuned percussion for color, the story-telling is meditative, peaceful with intro, climax, resolution.. Nominated for One World Music Radio’s Best Piano with Instrumentation Single (Results at end of May).
