National Charity League, Inc., Rio Grande Valley Chapter. Fostering mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization.

15/08/2024

🗞️ In the 1940s, National Charity League made history as the nation's first mother-daughter charity! The incredible women of that era expanded the organization's mission to include educational and cultural activities, organizing groups by grade level from 7th to 12th grade - just as we continue to do today!

15/08/2024

Step back in time to when "Tea for Two" was the song of the day and cloche hats with white gloves were the height of fashion. It was then that a visionary group of women in Los Angeles, led by Gladys Bernice Wilkinson, founded The Charity League. They partnered with the American Red Cross, crafting layettes and delivering food baskets to those in need during the holidays. Today, we proudly continue their legacy of service and volunteerism, inspired by their compassion and commitment. 💕

The National Museum of the American Latino Smithsonian, in partnership with the International Museum of Art & Science
held a round table discussion to listen to our patronesses and ticktockers this Thursday at IMAS. They are on a U.S. tour gathering information to take back to Washington DC to keep pushing for legislation to pass so that they can continue doing their excellent impactful work. National Charity League, Inc., Rio Grande Valley Chapter was appreciative of being selected to partner with them. It was such a great experience, and we look forward to the fantastic work they are proposing and can’t wait to see the Museum on Wheels that sheds light on Latino history and culture hit the ground! Thank you, Ann Fortescue, with IMAS, for such an excellent opportunity to be in the early stages of this journey.
To all our Juniors: watch for possible scholarships for next year! This is a great way to be involved and be good candidates! Get Involved!!!

Timeline photos 08/11/2022

It is Native American Heritage Month and throughout November we will be spotlighting some aspiring women starting with Susan La Flesche Picotte. She broke barriers and inspired leadership as a woman doctor in the 19th century. She was born and raised on Nebraska's Omaha reservation. At age 14, she left home to continue her schooling, attending the Elizabeth Institute in New Jersey and later the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute in Virginia (now Hampton University). She continued her education at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. She graduated a year early and first in her class. At age 24, she returned home and became the only doctor for more than 1,200 people across more than 400 miles. She made house calls on horseback and later by buggy. After she married Henry Picotte and had two sons, she sometimes brought her children with her on house calls, what an inspiring mother. Towards the end of her life, she solicited enough donations to open a hospital on the reservation in Walthill, Nebraska like a true philanthropist. She embodies all three of NCL's pillars!

How do you utilize our pillars in your daily life?
