Pet Rescues must provide 1099s to recipients and file them with the IRS by January 31, 2020. Intentional disregard of this obligation subjects you to unlimited penalties. Payments of more than $600 for prizes, attorney fees, independent contractors or rent are some examples of amounts required to be reported to the IRS on Form 1099-MISC.

08/01/2020

Pet Rescues if your revenues are < $50k than go online and file Form 990-N. If you don;t your are non-compliant and risk the loss of Donors who support your cause❤️

Each State has it's own requirements for nonprofit Pet Rescues. If you cross State borders you may have to register as a foreign corporation in those States you visit. If you don't follow the rules - ignorance is not a defense. Your State Charter will be revoked. Protect your nonprofit status Federally and according to State laws by fulfilling your filing requirements. If you don't it's public knowledge and will effect Donors decisions to support you❤️

03/01/2020

Form 990 is due by the 15th of the 5th month after your year end - so if you have a calendar year end - Form 990 is due by May 15th. If you are filing Form 990-N do it now - it takes 5 minutes. If you're late public records will list you as non-compliant. When you correct it on the Federal level - don't forget the State, which has additional requirements. You will loose donors if they search and find you non-compliant❤️

The Taxpayer First Act becomes effective for tax years beginning after July 1, 2019. So if you report on a calendar year end than e-filing Form 990 is optional in 2020 and becomes a requirement in 2021.

TELL THE IRS ABOUT SUSPECTED ABUSES
The IRS claims it is all ears – particularly about Organizations abusing tax-exempt status. A complaint is any communication alleging a tax-exempt organization may be non compliant with the tax law.
Every year, the IRS receives complaints which are sent to analysts at the Exempt Organizations Classifications Office in Dallas, TX. Classification experts confirm the identity of the referred organization. An agent analyzes the complaint and determines one of the following:
• The information does not warrant further action.
• The referral needs to re-evaluated at a future date.
• The referral needs further evaluation by another committee.
• The information warrants an examination.
Then the IRS may or may not decide to schedule an examination.

It doesn't matter if your Pet Rescue is big or small - a Board of trusted advisers will help your cause. If you are a small Rescue put together a group of people who support your work. Start with volunteers who can be significant donors or can connect you with others who want to offer financial assistance.

17/12/2019

Year end is the right time to aggressively pursue donations. Wealthy people are involved in year end tax planning and finding the right charitable organization to donate to is an important part of that process. If your Pet Rescue is a registered tax exempt organization a donor can make a cash contribution of up to 60% of their adjusted gross income. Attract donors by making your web presence a priority. Expand your outreach using social media. Also think about adding outside individuals to your Board. You'd be surprised of the positive effects developing your Board can make.

17/12/2019

If your Rescue is small you only have to file a 990-N. It takes 15 minutes. Don't risk loosing your nonprofit status.

10/12/2019

When you have a raffle with a prize of over $600 you are supposed to have the winner complete Form 5754 - Statement by Persons Receiving Gambling Winnings. Form 5754 gives you the information so you can report the winnings on Form W-2G to the recipient and the IRS by January 31.
If the prize is over $5,000 you must reduce the amount by 25% for backup withholding. Failing to submit the required forms and withholdings - makes you liable for the tax.
So be careful ❤️

09/12/2019

Make sure your Pet Rescue's Facebook cover photo fits the area in view. What looks good on desktop may be too big for mobile. So check both. The best Facebook cover picture dimensions are 820px x 360px. To make it easier - keep your name, logo and everything else that represents your Rescue in the middle. This way your cover picture will display perfectly on mobile and desktop devices. As the first impression of your page - capture your viewers' attention with a simple, professional looking cover photo.❤️

You may think your Pet Rescue is too small to worry about keeping records. Wrong. Not only are good records required to maintain your 501(c)3 status it helps to identify the success of your rescue efforts. A good record keeping system will save you time and money so you can devote more resources to rescue efforts. I know - you're in it for the pets - not the money. However, the more money you are able to attract the more pets you can rescue. Organize your administrative activities and after the holidays when all the Christmas puppy gifts are surrendered to the shelters - you can work on finding them homes rather than doing hated paperwork.❤️
