It has taken me 6 months to feel secure enough to share this post. And still the vulnerability gnaws at me, but here goes...

Today I yelled at my baby.

I looked into her tiny angry face, blotched and wet with tears, and I yelled at her.

‘What do you want’ I shouted at her in anguish. My entire body was taught with frustration, like a volcano about to explode.

The shame and guilt that immediately engulfed me did not wash away the anger. Instead it just added to my already overburden and wary shoulders.

Unperturbed by my eruption of emotion, my daughter simply continued on screaming. Her cries stifled the sound of my own sobs, and I continued to cry long after she had finally fallen asleep.

‘What kind of mother feels this kind of rage towards a baby’, I asked myself. Even as I write this, I think ‘how can I possibly share this dirty secret with anyone’.

But I will share it, because somewhere out there there is another mum just like me, who has had the exact same experience. And I want her to know that she is not alone.

Motherhood is a relentless erosion of resilience. And I think that ‘Mum Rage’ is a sign that we are scraping the absolute bottom of the resilience barrel. It is a sign that we need to stop, rest, get support. Experiencing ‘Mum Rage’ doesn’t make you a bad mother, it just makes you a normal one.

Realising and accepting that my outbursts of rage aren't fuelled by anger, but rather that they are a result of feeling overwhelmed, has helped to ease the shame associated with these episodes. I know that it is in those moments of rage that now, more than ever, I need to be kind and loving to myself, in order to be the best mother I can be.
