The need for volunteer lawyers to help educate voters and protect American democracy could not be greater.

The Electoral College is the body of electors established every four years under Article II
of the US Constitution for the sole purpose of electing the president and vice president of
the United States. However, no single Constitutional provision or law, encapsulates how
the Electoral College works in practice. Instead, the Constitution, Federal law, and the
laws of each state provide the framework for the smooth transfer of presidential power.
Differences in the applicable law and how the authority is derived from them are
exercised and shape the outcome of Presidential elections.
On October 13, 2020, at 1:00 pm the New York State Bar Association Task Force on the
Presidential Election is hosting a webinar for attorneys and journalist on the laws that
determine how the winner of the November election is decided. The webinar features
experienced election law scholars in the state who will describe laws governing the
Electoral College and the role of Congress in the process.

Most lawyers and litigants are aware that all but the most essential court operations have either been suspended or converted into virtual proceedings due to the coronavirus
pandemic.
You may not know that on September 9, 2020 New York State initiated a pilot program resuming in-person jury trials outside of New York City.
On September 21, 2020, the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and New York State announced that jury summonses will go out this week for a limited number of civil jury trials that are being scheduled for the Supreme Court, Civil Term, in all five counties of New York City starting in mid-to-late October. The court noted that the “trials will be conducted in courtrooms that have been specially retrofitted to handle in-person trials and proceedings in the context of our new normal.”
