One of the primary arguments of the pro-Addyi faction was the absence of any prescription medication for the treatment of s*xual dysfunction in women, of which low s*xual desire was the most common manifestation and a condition that Addyi purportedly could treat.

Even the Score and other organizations actively supporting the pro-Addyi movement argued that this seemed somehow s*xist given the many options available to men for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, one of the most common types of male s*xual dysfunction.

Flibanserin -- the active ingredient in Addyi -- had been in FDA's drug approval pipeline for a lengthy period. Boehringer-Ingelheim, a major German pharmaceutical company, was the first to develop flibanserin. The firm tested it as a possible treatment for hypoactive s*xual desire disorder, or HSDD. Among women, HSDD is the most common form of s*xual dysfunction.

Flibanserin, the active ingredient in Addyi, has failed to make much of a dent in the problem of hypoactive s*xual desire disorder, the most common form of female s*xual desire disorder.

It has now been a little more than a year since Addyi -- the so-called female Vi**ra -- went on sale in the United States.

Its performance in that period has been lackluster, failing to live up to the hype claimed by its proponents in the long and tortuous fight to win the Food and Drug Administration's approval for the drug.

All of which begs the question: Does Addyi or any other drug have the potential to fire up the libido in women who have lost their desire for s*x?

Although the FDA approved Addyi In August 2015, it attached a number of stringent conditions to its approval, not the least of which was a black box warning of potentially serious side effects -- severe hypotension and possible loss of consciousness.

Sildenafil citrate, or simply sildenafil, is the active ingredient in the brand-name drug Vi**ra. Sildenafil is known as generic Vi**ra because it is not sold under the Vi**ra brand name. People take it in a dosage of 25, 50, or 100 milligrams (mg) per day.
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor — the standard treatment for erectile dysfunction. Other PDE5 inhibitors include avanafil (Stendra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra).

Generic Vi**ra, or sildenafil, is a standard treatment for erectile dysfunction. Vi**ra is the brand name for sildenafil, but there is no difference between the generic and branded versions. Both require a prescription to order.

Until Vi**ra hit the scene in the late ’90s, treatment options for erectile dysfunction were limited.

“The thing that made Vi**ra so wonderful was the only thing before that was a drug called Caverject,” said former Pfizer attorney Kent Bernard. “Caverject needed to be injected into your p***s about half hour before you wanted to have s*x. You would not want to come within a mile of using that product,” he said.

Vi**ra, originally designed to treat high blood pressure, represented a medical breakthrough and became an overnight success. The drug brought in more than $25 billion, according to market research company Statista. Sixty-two million men around the world have taken the drug since it launched in 1998.

But the sun has set on those high-flying days. Last month the FDA approved five versions of sildenafil, the generic. Prices are plummeting, with a pill going anywhere from $30 to as little as 60 cents, according to analytics company Elsevier.

As more generics hit the market, Pfizer clearly hopes to run with its “little blue pill” as long as it can. That includes the time-honored strategy of launching its own generic.

Pfizer “sees generics coming and says, ‘I can do that.’ And they get into the generics business themselves,” said NYU law professor Scott Hemphill.

Believing some consumers will always prefer the branded product, Pfizer on July 1 also boosted the list price of its branded Vi**ra. That was one of 40 price hikes Pfizer delayed this week after President Donald Trump criticized the company.

Pfizer’s market share is eroding fast, but it has managed to keep 15 percent of it, said Tori Marsh with the consumer website GoodRx.

It is not clear whether sildenafil is the actual cause of vision loss.

Vi**ra is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant.

Many consumers consider dietary supplements to be natural and, therefore, safe. The prevention pill, called pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a combination of two drugs used to treat people with HIV. By taking PrEP daily, an uninfected person can greatly reduce his chances of contracting the AIDS virus from an infected partner.

The pill has already been approved in many countries, including the United States. But it has been dogged by concerns that its benefits could be outweighed by downsides: producing potentially serious side effects in healthy people and encouraging risky s*xual behavior.

Rachel Baggaley, an official with WHO's HIV Department, said studies now indicate neither of those worries is warranted. "We have had long follow-up periods, and the rate of adverse events are low," she said. These include impacts on bone density and renal function.

As for how PrEP influences people's s*xual behavior, she said, "It's become increasingly apparent that the people who choose PrEP may be the ones who for whatever reasons already have difficulty using condoms. So it's not causing less condom use."
