The Meaning of Life: Sagas of the Gods
By Nathan Anderson
Fenrir: Rage
Fenrir, the second child of Loki is a giant wolf. In the beginning Fenrir started small but as each day passed grew larger and stronger. Tyr that was the only one brave enough to raise the pup. Fearing the wolf’s power Odin decided to challenge Fenrir to prove its strength by breaking out of chains. Odin’s first test was simple and Fenrir easily broke the bonds. In the second test the chains were a lot bigger and stronger yet Fenrir broke free again. The final attempt Odin asked the dwarves of Svartalfheim to make restraints from things that did not exist. Roots of a mountain, the beards of women, the sound of a cats foot steps, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish and the spittle of a bird. This was called Gleipnir, this restraint was more ribbon like in appearance. This very act is symbolic of the delicate and distracting attempt to suppressing your rage. You can’t be direct and use chains you have to trick rage with a little distraction and misdirection.
During the third attempt, Fenrir grew cautious of the All-Father’s test and asked for a god to place a hand inside his mouth. Tyr the bravest of gods did not hesitate. Fenrir was not able to get free and the Gods cheered at their success. There was only one who did not appear pleased at the gods’ success and it was Tyr. Fenrir finds out Odin’s real intentions he claims Tyrs hand as compensation. Tyr kept a calm face while willingly giving his hand to Fenrir out of some moral justice as he had developed a relationship with the beast. This emphasises the fact that Tyr represents bravery and also that it can take bravery to suppress your rage.
The kids of Fenrir Sköl(mockery) and Hati (hate). Hati chases the moon and Sköl chases the sun across the sky. The meaning of their names and the symbolism behind the relentlessness of their chase is very powerful and could draw us to conclude their father represents rage. Unchecked rage can lead to hate and when you are furious with someone else you could be relentless in mocking them too. Mockery chasing the sun can be symbolic of trying to extinguish the brightness in you and hate taking your glow within the darkness. The idea that they are constantly chasing the sun and the moon until Ragnarök explains how hate and mockery works in life. The fact that the day and night never stop moving for anything can mean that no matter how much you wish you had more time in the day it is impossible for the sun and moon to stop or even slow down.
Fenrir, this giant wolf symbolises rage and fury that if unchecked will grow larger and stronger. In Ragnarök rage will devour Odin which is very symbolic as when you’re angry you lose the ability to use knowledge and wisdom as your rage will consume it.
The lessons from this story is that no victory is without sacrifice and that sometimes rage and bravery do have a connection but it’s only useful when controlled.
