✨A question clinicians receive often is “Will my child experience confusion when learning multiple languages at once?” Our simple answer is…No! 📖⭐️

It's a common misconception that learning multiple languages causes confusion. The truth is, many children can develop strong language skills in each language and have cognitive advantages from being bilingual or multilingual. Children are often quite adept at distinguishing between languages and adapting to the context in which they are used. 🌎🗺️🗣️

Children who have a speech or language delay will often struggle to meet communication milestones in one or more languages. If you have concerns regarding your child’s speech and language development, be sure to contact your local pediatrician or speech-language pathologist today! 📞📱📧

Let's clear the air on speech teletherapy! 🗣

✨ Common misconceptions say it's less effective, lacks personal touch, and only addresses specific communication issues. But truth be told, it's a powerful tool, that can help a wide range of speech challenges. 🌟💬

Here are some common misconceptions about speech teletherapy that have been debunked 📚:

1️⃣ “Teletherapy is not as effect as in-person therapy.” Some people believe that teletherapy is not as effective as in-person therapy; however, research has shown that teletherapy can be just as effective when conducted by qualified professionals. 👩‍🏫📖

2️⃣ “Teletherapy adds too much screen time.” Children are actively engaged, communicating, and interacting socially with the clinician, so that parents don’t have to worry about static, unhealthy screen time. 💻⌨️

3️⃣ “Teletherapy isn’t secure or confidential.” Therapists use HIPAA-secured platforms to ensure patient confidentiality and security. 🔐🔑

4️⃣ “My child is too young to participate in teletherapy.” Teletherapy for young children incorporates engaging activities and a parent-coaching model, which involves guiding parents on how to play and use effective therapy strategies at home. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🏡

5️⃣ “My child won’t form a personal connection with the therapist.” Teletherapy involves active communication and play between the child and clinician. Many clients and therapists report forming strong connections through teletherapy. 🧩👨‍🏫

6️⃣ “My child won’t be engaged during teletherapy.” Teletherapists use various interactive tools and techniques to engage clients effectively. Movement breaks are also used to give more active children the sensory input they need. 🛝🙆‍♀️

Incorporating the toys or activities you already have at home into your daily routine can help your child build expressive language skills and begin to talk more.

Here are 5 expressive language activities you can practice at home:

📚 Picture books: Asking
open-ended questions like “what are they doing?” or “what’s happening in this picture?” can help encourage your child to build stories or answer questions.

🧸 Pretend Play: In a pretending or building a scenario, your child can work on storytelling, sequencing activities, answering questions and more! Remember to ask open-ended questions like “what should we do next?” or “where should we go?”

🚂 Train sets/cars: Cars and trains can be used to have your child verbalize phrases, like “ready, set, go!” or “go fast!” You can encourage your child to make these requests before handing them an item or starting an action.

🫧 Bubbles: This is one of our favorite activities to target speech therapy skills with our younger kiddos! Before blowing bubbles, ask your child to say “more bubbles”, “my turn”, or “your turn”.

🧑‍🍳 Cooking: Cooking is a great way to build expressive language skills through sequencing (e.g., asking your child what happens first? Next? etc.). Having your child narrate the recipe is a great way to do this.

The possibilities are endless! ✨✨
