Judge David R. Howard
I like to give updates on the Juvenile Court, the law, and matters of personal and/or public interest.
Kids of all ages need to hear these.
It’s empathy, kindness and respect.
Kindness. Empathy. Respect.
The Juvenile Court will be closed tomorrow, July 4th, in celebration of Independence Day. Celebrate America!
I wanted to wish a very Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers, dads, daddies, stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, foster fathers, friends, and even the moms pulling double duty, that have risen to the role and task of being someone’s Father. Your impact is amazing. God bless you.
Juvenile Court doesn’t believe in doing things small. In addition to opening the new Courthouse, and swearing in Magistrate Hickey, we also celebrated the swearing in of Magistrate Erin Stubbs. She joins the team to focus on our Safe Baby Court.
I’m incredibly proud to work with these folks. Not only do they make coming to work fun, they demonstrate a level of care that is consistently incredible. This is the best Juvenile Court in Tennessee.
Yesterday started a new beginning for the Juvenile Court. In addition to a new Courthouse, we also have a new Magistrate. Please join me in welcoming Magistrate Alan Hickey as he assumes his new responsibilities.
Courthouse Day One is in the books. Happy to be there, and looking forward to all the good we can do.
Dockets begin Monday.
After six years of dedication to the children and families of Sumner County, Magistrate Erin Begley has stepped down from her office and accepted a position with the State of Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security.
Please join me in celebrating and thanking Magistrate Begley for her service. She is one of the best, and will be greatly missed.
The Sumner County Circuit, Criminal, Chancery, General Sessions, and Juvenile Courts, as well as their respective Clerk’s Offices will remain closed during the week of May 27th through May 31st. This will allow everyone to complete their relocation to the new Sumner County Courthouse, located at 155 East Main Street, Gallatin.
All Courts and Clerks reopen on Monday, June 3rd at 8:00am.
Courthouse Moving Days continue…Juvenile Court has finished and is now in set-up mode. General Sessions starts their move today!
Thunderbirds are go!
It’s Courthouse Moving Day! Juvenile Court is go!
The Juvenile Court will begin its relocation on May 20th. We look forward to serving the community in our new location.
I wanted to wish a very Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers, moms, mamas, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, foster mothers, and friends that have risen to the role and task of being someone’s Mother. Your impact is amazing. God bless you.
Yesterday, I had the honor of dedicating Judge Mike Carter’s portrait when it was unveiled. What I didn’t know (and kept as a surprise for me) was that it was painted by Mike’s daughter, Kelsi. It looks just like my friend.
Though it will receive a new home in the new Sumner County Courthouse, for now, it will be displayed in the General Sessions, Division 3 Courtroom…Mike’s own courtroom.
Borrowed from my friends at Union Elementary. It’s the first day of TCAP testing! Hoping it’s a great day for students and teachers!
While there is still more to do and discuss, there is actual momentum in raising the rates for appointed attorneys. A Senate committee approved sending the matter to Finance for inclusion in the State’s budget.

The Sumner County Juvenile Court, including the Clerk’s Office, will be closed on Tuesday, March 5th for Election Day. The Court will reopen on Wednesday, March 6th.
Borrowed from a friend, and certainly true.
Today marks 30 years that my Judicial Assistant Cheryl Hix has been employed by the Sumner County Juvenile Court. She’s smart, fiery, and compassionate. You can’t ask for much better than that when working with kids and families.
This is the new Courthouse…
Early voting begins tomorrow, February 14th. I encourage you to exercise this right. And don’t forget…there are Sumner County races on the ballot, as well.
Occasionally, I am asked to hear cases for other Judges. This usually happens when there is a conflict. For the past two weeks, and because of a conflict in my own office, I have been honored to trade dockets with my friend and fellow Judge Kee Bryant-McCormick.
I want to thank Rachel and Amanda (Judge McCormick’s staff), the General Sessions Clerks Office, the Court Officers, and all the lawyers for making me feel so welcome. You took great care of me. I only hope I kept things running smoothly for you.
I was honored to speak at the kickoff event for this wonderful program. Isaiah 117 House is a beautiful initiative designed to, as their motto says, change the way foster care begins. I look forward to what this brings to the children of our County.
