Did you know that synthetic red food dye can cause gut inflammation?

The correlation between intestinal disruption and synthetic red dye was found in the common food colorings: Allura Red, FD&C Red 40 and Food Red 17. A study published in Nature Communications found that consumption of the synthetic red dyes caused an increase in serotonin in the gut, resulting in chronic inflammation on the lining of the colon. Long term exposure could even result in inflammatory bowel disease.

This is not the first evidence of synthetic red dye having negative effects on the body. Therefore, consumers may be inclined to intentionally avoid products with these dyes. Data from Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) supported this assumption, reporting that 60% of consumers seek to avoid artificial coloring in food.

We believe in sticking to all natural ingredients for M2M products. Fortunately, we’ve been able to create beautiful colors in our gummy bases, without the need for artificial dyes. We’ve achieved a vibrant red color by using elderberry juice and we’ve created a bright pink using vegetable juice.
