Delayed Administration and Contraindicated Drugs Place Hospitalized Parkinson’s Disease Patients at Risk 20/10/2023

If you or your loved one's have Parkinson's, you need to read this before being hospitalized!
Believe me, if you think human mistakes don't happen because you carefully reviewed your/
your loved one's medication schedule with the hospital staff prior to admission, think again!
One out of three people with Parkinson's are given either the wrong dose of their Parkinson's
drug or given it at the wrong time or with other anesthetic drugs that interfere badly with
their usual Parkinson's drug, causing a worsening of their symptoms (tremors, agitation.
confusion, imbalance, severe hallucinations,...). Involve your neurologist in the hospitalization
process and have him or her be consulted by the hospital medical team to avoid unecessary
or even tragic health consequences !

Why are the Parkinson's non-motor symptoms such as anxiety, depression, dementia, episodic exhaustion, chronic constipation...so hard to treat ?
The main reason is that these are Parkinson's symptoms you can't see & you can't understand that which you can't see!
Trust me, figuring out my invisible symptoms of Parkinson's the first 4 years, was like walking through dense fog with no compass in hand, no one to guide or forewarn me about pockets of moving sand and severe storms along the way!!!
What helped me the most, other than my eternal optimism, was a combination of simple daily exercises, a nourishing diet, daily mental stimulation mixed with socialization, a loving & involved family/ support system, and of course the minimal medication dose at maximum efficacy! Anything less than "all of the above" would make your journey hard and at times overwhelming.
Trust me it took me 4 years of daily research into the latest and most reliable literature along with countless interviews with movement disorder specialized neurologist and conversations with the most successful people with Parkinson's to develop a realistic plan that helped me build a semi normal life!
So next time you meet a person with this mysterious Parkinson's diagnosis, I suggest that you show some compassion for them if they move slow (Bradykinesia) , open the door for them, lean closer to them if they sound barely audible because they have a million extra physical and emotional issues to deal with that you can't see and understand !
If you are in the Dallas or North Texas area, come to see me and many other interesting people on Saturday Oct. 14th, at 9200 Inwood Rd. Dallas, TX 75220 at
Lovers Lane United Methodist Church from 8:30 am-2:15 pm.
This event is free of charge yet it includes a free breakfast and lunch for all participants who register on www.daps.org

One more reason to minimize an animal-based diet in favor of a plant-based diet!
I did it as of 13 years ago when I got my Parkinson's diagnosis and feel a lot more energetic and less stiff.

Today's topic is caffeine, which is the most popular drug in the world. Almost everyone young or old has tried it at some point! But does that mean it’s appropriate for frequent use?
The common energy drink has around 200 milligrams of caffeine while the average cup of coffee contains about 100mg. For adults, the recommended caffeine limit is 400mg/day while for teens, it is much lower or 100mg/day. Could you imagine consuming two or three caffeinated beverages a day and what damage that could do to your body? Overconsumption of caffeine has been associated with many negative health effects such as anxiety, migraine headache, heartburn, excessive sweating, rapid heartbeat, hypertension and in extreme cases, cardiac arrest. It must be noted that while these anomalies result from excessive daily caffeine use, occasional caffeine usage CAN be enjoyed safely in limited amounts. Your daily cup of coffee or a few sips of the occasional energy drink will not hurt you if you are mindful of the amount you decide to drink. Unfortunately, the culture that we live in makes it casual to frequently consume caffeine and normalizes it as a source of daily buzz! The industry actively targets ages as young as 16 up to 30 because they are most vulnerable at a time when their lives are busier and more stressful. The truth is that caffeine by itself doesn't offer any calories so where does the buzz come from ? As we take sips of a caffeinated cup of coffee, we trigger adrenaline release which starts a chain reaction in the body that requires energy. To satisfy the extra energy demand from different organs, your body starts borrowing energy from different tissue such as muscle energy reserve known as glycogen. So in other words, you smart body borrows from Peter to give to Paul ! So every time you drink a caffeinated cup of coffee without any food, you end up with a calorie deficit! And that temporary buzz is associated with a quick adrenaline release which over time, wears down your natural body's stress response, which explains why regular coffee drinkers become addicted to their daily dose of caffeine and keep increasing their caffeine consumption from one cup to two, then three, and so on .
So next time you reach for a caffeinated drink, be mindful about the maximum amount of caffeine you can have and stick with that personal limit.

Faye

It is delicious, nutritious and low in sugar so it would be the perfect after-dinner snack that won't ruin your diet! My favorite way to enjoy this snack is with organic Greek yogurt or a fruit sorbet. This product is available at your local Costco.

Connection between fast food and obesity

There is no doubt that fast foods are becoming more and more detrimental to our health because they are more convenient, cheaper, and tastier than healthy foods. The food industry pushes us to eat larger portion sizes by communicating subliminal messages like “bigger is better.” This is especially true in food advertisements geared towards children who have fewer defenses against overeating than adults. All of the factors already mentioned combined with our sedentary lifestyles have made us a nation of overweight, overfed, and underactive people. In the U.S. one out of three American adults and about one out of every six children and teenagers are classified as obese. To break the cycle of obesity, we not only need to educate families on better food choices but also how to include them in their budget. The fast-food industry as a whole also needs to post information about calorie content of each food on their menus. Recent studies support that people with awareness of food calorie content consumed fewer calories.

Let’s talk eggs.

A common purchase at the store, but how do you know if you are buying the right ones for your body. There are pasture raised and cage free. In addition to the living conditions of the chickens, you have to take into account what they are being fed. The most humane type of eggs are ones which come from free range chickens consuming a whole food diet, compared to ones living in a cage eating feed.
A big benefit to including eggs in the entire family's diet would be Choline for memory and muscle control, as well as vitamin B-12 which is responsible for up keeping bone health, blood cell integrity, and mood regulation. For individuals who stick to a vegetarian diet which is deficient in food sources of B12, or those who want to simply eat healthier, eggs are great because they contain protein, B12 Vitamin and healthy fats that are essential to good nutrition.

Living with non-celiac gluten sensitivity for the past 20 years has been bittersweet at best! Bitter because of all the obvious dietary restrictions we as a family have chosen to follow to gain better digestive health, and sweet for the higher mental & physical health we have gained!
Many of my 2000 + private clients ask me for a miracle cure in an instant using a magic diet that would heal their leaky gut, wipe out their foggy brain, gas, bloating, inattentive brain, etc... in their children and themselves ! The answer I have always given is : you didn't get sick overnight so you won't get well overnight either ! The best nutritionist with the purest intention cannot get you or your children healthy without your daily commitment to her dietary and lifestyle program. Gaining gut health takes consistent , daily ingestion of clean, toxin-free foods that nourish the body at the cellular level. A diet made up of donuts, candies, chips, pizzas, sweet carbonated drinks, etc... in between a few bites of kale and avocado will not work towards getting you back to health! So as we approach the New Year, I wish you more than anything a clear mindset that turns into "One Impactful behavior" daily, which gets you a step closer to having a healthy body every day.
No excuses, no halfway promises, no unrealistic goals or empty resolutions in 2023.
Make the NEW YEAR the most impactful and health producing year ever!

Not all calcium supplements are created equal !
Over the course of my 30 years of Nutrition practice, I've frequently been asked by my lady clients what type of calcium supplement they should take for best absorption and how much is enough ?
My over-simplified answer is:
1. Di-calcium malate has been shown to be the most bioavailable form of calcium supplement over calcium carbonate or citrate.
The di-calcium malate is also the most concentrated form of calcium therefore it ends up being absorbed at a higher rate compared to other insoluble form like carbonate.
People with a food allergy to citrus should avoid taking calcium citrate! Also if a person doesn't make enough stomach acid, they may not absorb all of their calcium carbonate supplement.

2. Although taking a high dosage of calcium isn't toxic, like the excess of any elemental mineral, it could lead to serious conditions such as Hypercalcemia (too much circulating calcium that doesn't get absorbed in the bones). So before you start taking any calcium supplement, check with a nutritionist or dietician or your medical doctor first to get the safest supplement for your particular genetic make up.

3. Age has an inverse relation to calcium absorption so the older we get, the lower our rate of calcium absorption will be.

4. Young adults, older teens along with elderly people's lower mobility or inactive lifestyle could lead to the lower calcium formation in the bones. An inactive lifestyle as a result of not engaging in high-impact exercises (walking, stair climbing,...) could lead to development of brittle bones or osteopenia (pre- osteoporosis stage). My youngest client with osteopenia is 14 years old!

5. Balancing your calcium intake is easier before bone density diseases occur than fixing those diseases with supplements later!

6. Men can develop osteoporosis too! When I consult with a middle age man who isn't consuming much dairy and braking bones or showing weakness in terms of dental health, I include some high quality calcium supplements in their daily regimen with great results!

Email me at: [email protected] to briefly discuss your individual calcium needs & avoid a lifetime of bone building medications that are associated with serious side effects!

As the saying goes: An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure !

Treat your gut and you have treated your sick body!
Functional medicine's basic principles are that the body heals itself & that healing of the body starts in the gut.
The father of modern psychiatry, French psychiatrist Phillipe Pinel (1745-1828) noted that "The primary seat of insanity generally is in the region of the stomach and intestines". Yet, it is only recently that a Canadian psychiatrist, Dr. Abram Hoffer, has collected some evidence pointing to the gut-brain connection in schizophrenic patients who improved dramatically by following a gluten and dairy free diet!
According to Hippocrates: "All disease start in the gut". Modern medicine has discovered that our 100 trillion bacteria living inside our gut (digestive tract) are responsible for many functions such as:
1. synthesizing B vitamins,
2. boosting our immune system
3. controlling our brain function
4. regulating our metabolism & our weight
5. regulating our mood

So if we know that our modern stressful lifestyle is harsh on these friendly bacteria that regulate so many of our bodily functions, we have to feed them some "probiotics" to help them grow so we can preserve our gut health first and subsequently our overall health.
A balanced gut repair program should include:
1. A multi-strain probiotic (after testing is done to determine the presence or absence of pathogenic bacteria to avoid inadvertent feeding of the pathogenic bacteria)! People with autoimmune disorders such as Celiac, RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis), chronic neurological disorders, Autistic Spectrum disorders among many others should be tested before taking a probiotic as some strains may aggravate their condition!

2. A prebiotic (fiber) bacteria for daily growth of our friendly bacteria. I always do a full diet assessment of the client before recommending a prebiotic as some may not need to take this supplement. You may be wasting your hard earned $$$ on prebiotics when you could easily incorporate it in your diet! For those with chronic constipation, I recommend a combination of pre- and single probiotic to give a bigger punch to gut healing!

3. Polyphenols: used to heal the gut of those who do NOT suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) since polyphenols generally irritate the gut of patients with IBS & IBD as well as those with food sensitivities to polyphenols! Yes you may develop some negative side effects to polyphenol supplements as well as the foods rich in polyphenols!
For a 30 minute diet assessment to determine the best probiotics, pre-biotic, and other gut supporting foods & supplements, email us at: [email protected]

April 11th was World Parkinson Day. As a proud member of this community for 12 years, I have noticed a large knowledge gap between the medical community and the People with Parkinson's for whom this knowledge is vital! This information gap gets even larger when you factor in gender differences. The case that best illustrates this point is the fact that 40% of the total Parkinson's population are women yet reportedly less that 10% of research projects target women specific issues. How do we fix this inherent lack of initiative in studying women's motor & non-motor symptoms?
Perhaps we could start by interviewing specifically women with Early Parkinson-like symptoms on an annual basis regardless of race or socio-economic background. The general medical consensus is that the "prodormal" stage of Parkinson's, where early signs and symptoms appear occasionally, could show up 10-20 years before the patient gets diagnosed! So it bears to logic to offer internal medicine doctors the right education about early signs of Parkinson's to be able to detect them early, and refer the person to a neurologist who is also a movement disorder specialist or MDS. I have a vision that by detecting early diagnostic markers of Parkinson's, we might be able to control the development or the extent of this neurological disease. My ultimate hope is that by detecting the early signs, we could prevent the disease onset using the latest diet, exercise (lifestyle), positive mindset, and of course effective medical therapies! That is how I've successfully slowed the progress of my Parkinson's and reversed from stage 3 to stage 1, using a specific diet mixed with high intensity exercise.
As Napoleon Hill wisely said: If your mind can imagine it, you can achieve it! I imagined & strongly believed that I could live my best life given the cards that I have been dealt, and I am living that best life every day!

I was deeply saddened upon hearing the tragic news of Ms. Cheslie Kryst su***de at the young age of 30! It especially hurt me when I heard the cause of her su***de: Cyberbullying !
I rarely take a social or political stand in social media because I only get engaged in such discussions face-to-face when people could see my real emotions behind my thoughts & vice versa I could see other's. However this young 30 year old had a brilliant mind, smart, educated, beautiful inside and out, 2019 Miss USA, talented TV reporter for the show "Extra", caring friend, daughter, ... and a bright future ahead of her so WHY did she even believe in the ugly words of bullies? The answer I always come up with in these tragic, & unexpected su***des is: LONELINESS! LACK OF DEEP CONNECTION & HOPELESSNESS :(
Ms. Kryst according to her TV colleagues and Mother was always seemingly happy, smiling, dancing on TV and off, & surrounded by caring family and friends! So what signs did everyone miss that could have clued someone about the mental anguish she was feeling ? I certainly don't know the full story nor can I judge anyone but as a Mom of 2 adult children I can share with other parents what my husband & I did to prevent such tragedy which was: to show our love through meaningful actions for our kids on a daily basis to negate the possible harmful social media effect !
The keyword being " show your love daily" not once a week or longer, and if you are not the warm & fuzzy kind of parent, or think that's cheesy or that your kids already know that you love them, the next thing I'd ask you is: why wouldn't you as a parent want to show your love to your kids daily ? In these rough times when we are physically separated from our kids due to covid measures or feel anxious or frustrated or frankly angry at the virus that doesn't quit its spread, we need to keep our meaningful connections alive, keep our kids and their close friends closer, share the deep love by calling them daily & asking tell tell questions like: Are you happy with your life? Is anyone or anything bothering you ? & if you don't have that relationship with your kids that allows them to open up to you, then hire professional help or send a family or friend in to get them talking. Yes it does take a big village to raise a kid !
On another front, I hold the executives at the top of social media companies indirectly responsible for fueling the "anxiety promoting" fires by allowing teens and even young adults to get exposed to these vicious sources of hate on social media sites! How do I know that ? Well just look for the type of ads they allow on Instagram for young population. They are looking at emotionally arousing teen girls by encouraging them to be perfect then if you can't meet those unrealistic goals, they anger you more by making you feel "unacceptable"! As you all know, anger and anxiety are addictive behaviors! I let you guess the rest.
May Ms. Kryst 's soul RIP and may her pain and her su***de propel senators who have evidence in their hands about the corrosive effects of social media, pass laws to stop these heartless social media executives from allowing such influential ads.

Much love to all,
Faye

To all the busy or inactive or phyisically limited people : Listen up! A recent study published in the prestigious Journal of American Medical Association JAMA, found that plain walking for 10 minutes a day will result in saving over 130,000 lives every year due to its cardiovascular benefits!
Yes you heard it right: 10 short minutes a day could save your life or that of a sedentary loved one ! So no more excuse about not having enough time for exercise :)
Let's get a comfy pair of walking shoes on and start walking at least for 10 minutes, feeling good & living long.

The main reasons why about 1 in 10 children in America are diagnosed with ADD/ ADHD ?
1. Air polluted with airborne mercury particles, coal, carbon and other harmful compounds
2. Polluted soil where pesticides and herbicides used on GMO foods (Genetically Modified Organisms) are released in the soil !
3. A vitamin & mineral deficient diet of mainly high processed fast foods, packaged foods, high sugar foods & beverages tainted with artificial food coloring & preservatives/ additives!
4. High stress lifestyle which could trigger a leaky gut
5. Excessive prescription medication use which is associated with unhealthy imbalanced microbiome in the gut where unfriendly pathogenic bacteria dominates the friendly bacteria!
6. Lack of accurate scientific knowledge of good nutrition among parents, teachers, sports activity coaches, restaurant operators/ chefs, cooks, even some trusted healthcare professionals who don't have the time to differentiate facts from fiction :(
7. The general advertising world tempting children with too many colorful & tasty, fatty, & overly sweet or salty foods multiple times a day during the peak of family TV viewing time!
8. Children with food insecurities have little or no access to nutritious & more expensive foods than highly processed foods like cheap donuts, cookies, chips, artificially colored cereals, pizza, etc...which offer high empty calories to their growing bodies! Most children with ADHD lack an essential fatty acid in their brains which is found in seafood which is rarely eaten by them!
Any question ?

Get vaccinated & let's tackle these 8 problem areas one at a time starting with us, the parents of these innocent children, seeking true nutrition knowledge by reading food labels more, comparing brands, and cooking more fresh foods at home!

The top 3 diet & lifestyle tips that lead to permanent weight management:
First, the definition of a diet here is a person's eating plan, as opposed to a restrictive meal plan! Human beings aren't wired psychologically to survive on restricted calorie diets that lead to deprivation and hunger! To really produce weight loss, a diet has to be based on 3 S's: Sustainable, Satisfying, & Simple.

1. Sustainable is a diet that includes foods that are grown while protecting the integrity of the farmland, foods that are grown locally, freshly delivered to our grocery stores for you to enjoy while fresh! A diet that isn't based on fresh ingredients, or processed and artificially preserved to extend shelf life in cans or boxes, will not be as nourishing as a diet based on freshly harvested foods. Such a diet leads to permanent health, and long lasting weight loss and ultimately weight management!

2. Satisfying refers to a diet that is tasty and socially satisfying at the same time. For example to include salad vegetables in your lifelong diet plan, you have to choose those veggies that appeal to your taste buds without a cup of high calorie dressing! My go to satisfying snacks are Smart pop Pop corn @ 15 calories / cup or 1 cup of plain greek yogurt with 1 tablespoon of granola topping.

A Socially satisfying diet means one that includes close contact with the community of friends and family. For example, a Mediterranean diet is successful because it encourages an active lifestyle (walking or bicycling to and from fresh food markets or incorporating an hour of physical activity in your daily life).

3. Simple in diet world means a meal plan that is easy to prepare at an affordable price! !
Not everyone is a formally trained chef and you don't have to be in order to be a successful weight manager. Just find easy to assemble, semi-homemade meals that appeal to you and that are accessible at your neighborhood grocery store!

Two days ago, I posted a summary of results from an effective Natural Attention Deficit Hyyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) therapy using a specific combination of Fish oils in addition to traditional ADHD drug therapy. Based on the positive feedback I got, I'm doing a follow up sharing more concrete results, in simple English, so that you can relate :)
Key findings in 117 children with a variety of diagnoses aka Developmental Coordination Disroder (DCD) with motor function deficits, overlapping Autism symptoms & ADHD symptoms, age 5-12 using 2 capsules of Fish oil for 3 months were:
- The children 's ADHD-related scores improved in 11 out of 13 CTRS-L scale subscores compared to the placebo (no fish oil)
- Before fish oil treatment, mean scores for reading & spelling were 1 year below chronological age, after 3 months on fish oil,
their mean increase in reading age was 9.5 months! Amazing.
- The mean increase in spelling age was 6.6 months (5 times higher than those not taking fish oil).
- On average, students also showed a significant visual improvement in handwriting (see sample from before & after fish oil nutrition support below).
- If you are wondering if an average brand of fish oil at your local vitamin section of a high end grocery store is going to get you the same results, the answer if a definite NO !
- This specific combination of 3 different fatty acids in the right ratio, is processed to eliminate toxic metals, and prevent burping a stinky fish smelling bubble.
- Adults with ADHD & /or learning & focus difficulties could be screened and supported with an effective fatty acid support therapy. Ask Faye for age-adjusted fish oil therapy.
