YES!

I recently taught a new course for PESI on ‘Emotional Eating’ and the first segment was all about deconstructing the term emotional eating. Why? Because eating in response to how we feel is actually a normative and inherently natural thing for humans to do. It’s something we were born doing! Diet culture came in to rob the connection between emotions and food. Your clients have been taught to fear emotions and food. It’s time to get real with this, first for yourself, then for your clients!

The word “control” gets lost in ED treatment.
It’s way too simple to say those struggling with an eating disorder are trying to be in control or gain control. That’s a simplified cognitive statement that goes nowhere to truly and deeply understand what someone is really experiencing INSIDE!

Yes, it’s about control. But it’s about the attempt to control the following:
The wish to feel different inside. To feel more stable, secure and safe. It’s about wishing that everything swirling around in your brain would slow down and that you could clearly choose life and food freely again. It’s wishing for your internal system to feel calm, grounded and in control once again. Control is not a conscious choice in recovery!

This was one of the many deep insights I had during my experience in the Befriending Your Body Program - when we restrict our food intake (aka starve our brains and bodies) or restrict after a binge eating episode it literally impacts functioning in the brain, including the area of the brain responsible for perception of BODY IMAGE! This is powerful work. Check out my website to learn more. www.melissagolub.com

Please note, when patterns of eating are irregular, disrupted, inconsistent, or harming in any way, your brain responds to the signals it receives from your entire sensory and autonomic nervous system. This is why these behaviors become a vicious cycle. Behavior comes in because there has been internal disruption and then it continues because of the further disruption in signals it creates.

This is why it is crucial to develop Interoceptive Awareness in recovery.

The more self-compassionate you become, the less shame you have about your body and yourself. The less shame you have about your body and yourself, the more you can trust your body and yourself. The more you trust your body and yourself, the less you NEED anything from diet culture.

It all starts with self-compassion!

When one of you is coming home, it’s a great idea to physically greet each other. Ideally, the partner who is home comes to greet the partner coming in.

Once they come in, after they've taken their mask off and washed their hands, I want you two to embrace each other and hold. Be mindful of each other’s body. If you are noticing specifically where on their body your partner is holding tension, just gently touch that area as a reminder for your partner to relax in that area. Your partner will do the same for you.

This only takes a minute or so. Once you’re both relaxed sufficiently, you can go about business. Think of this as a ritual that acts as a sort of reset. No matter what kind of day they had or what mental state they may have been in before walking into that door, this shows them that they are now home.

So often we are searching and striving for "what else" we can do and add in for self-care and we are missing all the little things that we are already doing! Stay focused on what you already DO that helps and rest and stay with that for a while.
