On July 4, 1828, Charles Carroll, the wealthiest man in America and the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence, laid the cornerstone for the Phoenix Shot Tower, later known as the Old Baltimore Shot Tower. The 234-foot tower was completed that same year.
A beloved icon of today’s Baltimore, the city once boasted of four similar towers. The name “shot tower” derives from its function as a factory for “drop shot” for muskets, which was created by dropping molten lead from a platform at the top of the tower into a vat of cold water at the bottom. When hardened, dried and polished, the shot was sorted into 25-pound bags.
The tower remained the tallest structure in America until 1846, when the Trinity Church on Wall Street, New York City, claimed the title. In 1921, the Union Oil Company bought the property for $14,500 and planned to turn the site into a gas station. Preservations prevailed however, and by 1928, had raised enough money to buy the tower and present it as a gift to the city. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971. The original Baltimore Bullets basketball team was named in honor of the tower’s role in producing shot, as was the team that became the Washington Wizards. The photo above was taken in 1870.

When it was completed in 1921, the McCormick Building on Light Street at the Inner Harbor was the largest steel and concrete structure south of New York City.
It housed 12-1/2 acres of sunlit floor space, an analytical lab, a printing plant, and its own private railroad siding, among many other amenities. To outsiders, what it may have been mostly known for was its cacophony of spice fragrances that wafted through the neighborhood almost continuously, and that often varied depending on which ship had just delivered the goods from one of the far corners of the world.
When the building was demolished in 1988, the smell of spices hung in the air for weeks as a reminder of Baltimore’s continuing importance in world trade.
