Our Brred owl was released last week and is still visiting the feeding station every couple of days while he figures out how to hunt on his own.

Baby kestrel still comes and eats once a day. He eats dragonflies and other large bugs most of the time but still relies on mama for a main course.

This is why it is so important to contact game amd fish or a wildlife rehabilitator if you find any abandoned or sick wildlife.

It is summer and everyone, especially children, are spending more time outside. Please be sure that everyone understands safety, animals and even rabies.

We got a second kestrel in today. It is almost fully feathered and will be placed with our other one to get ready for release!

We got a single baby wood duck in today. It was very cold and has been without mom for a while. We have it heating up and will try to get it to eat later🤞

Baby Kestrel has all adult feathers in! He had been practicing his flight skills by jumping and gliding from one branch to another in his outside flight pen.

The baby skunks we took in this week have their eyes starting to open and are getting more coordinated. We were able to get this video of them learning to play.

Skunks get a bad reputation due to the smell of their spray. Skunks spray very rarely as it can take days to a week to refuel and they is the only defense they have against predators. They eat grub and earth worms, small mammals like mice, and small amphibians.

We have 3 fledgling screech owls.

North American screech owls range in sizes when grown from 6 to 10 inches tall and between 4 and 8 ounces (approximately the size of a soda can). They have variations in colors of red to gray. They nest in hollows made by other animals or natural hollows in trees mostly. They hunt large insects and small mammals like mice. They do not screech like their name suggests but instead have a monotone purring trill lasting 3–5 seconds (if you listen closely in the video you can hear it!)

Due to the severe weather over the last few months we have had an increased amount of calls about orphaned animals. While many people see cute baby animals and think it is a good idea to make them pets that is not what is best for the animal. In Arkansas it is illegal to own bats, skunks and white tail deer. These specific animals have a greater chance of carrying rabies and or other zoonotic diseases. Although it is legal to own other wildlife it is illegal for a non licensed individual to realease those animals. They are often to friendly and dependent upon people and either can't successfully make it in the wild or are a greater risk to the human population by approaching them for food/safety.

If you find any wild animal please find and contact a licensed wildlife rehabber that can raise and release these animals properly and safely.

Baby is feathering in quickly and doing very well!!

14/05/2022

Yesterday we got a small kestrel falcon in around 2 weeks old and is just starting to get its feathers. We will have this little one for a couple of months after it is fully fledged while it learns to fly, once it is released we will still provide a food station until it can learn to hunt successfully.
Kestrels are the smallest birds of prey and feed on insects and small mammals such as mice, moles, lizards etc.when grown Males have wings that are gray to slate blue on both sides, while the females have copper color wings.

Thank you Carla from Marion Humane Society for rescuing this baby and getting it to us.

PLEASE DONATE if you can we need new pens!!

We know times are hard on everyone but we take in dozens of orphaned wildlife each year and we just aren't going to be able to take in many this year without new pens! We are self funded and everything comes out of our pockets and all of our free money goes into food and formula for the orphans. We are needing about 4 to 6 new cages like the ones pictured below. We also could really use a couple of incubators for our newborn baby birds and other critical intakes. If you are able to donate we would appreciate it so much. Also if you are local and have any panels or fencing material you would like to donate you can ask for Dj or Anita at wynne friends of animals to drop it off or call 8702388663 and leave a message and someone will call you back to pick it up.

Pictures below to reference price of cages and incubators and just a handful of animals we saved and released last year.

We got this Barred owl in a few days ago with a head injury and luckily no broken bones. It just needed a few days to recover and a steroid shot and she was ready to go!

Fledgling Mississippi Kite Bird. Baby is finally eating and drinking well. Kite birds are small prey birds that eat mostly insects, such as, grass hoppers, cicada and other crop damaging bugs.

We got this adult screech owl in today. He originally had a head injury but now just needs time for his muscles to strengthen so he can fly and be realeased!

We had this young Great Horned owl brought to us a couple of days ago after being trapped in barbed wire. He is healing great and will be released soon!

We picked these guys up last night. Skunks get a bad rep for their stinky spray but they actually try not to use it. It can take up to 10 days to fill back up after it is used leaving them vulnerable. If you see a skunk in your yard just leave them alone and they will go on their way!

Here is a slow motion video of one of our recently released Barred owls coming "home" for his dinner. Although they are wild at this point we do a slow release and we still provide them one meal a day to help them out until they get the hang of hunting for themselves.
