Skin Packaging Vs. Blister Packaging
When it comes to mid-level budget retail packaging, the choice often comes down to blister packaging or skin packaging. There are many similarities between the two packaging techniques but there are also many differences.
Of the two options, blister packaging has the highest “perceived value” on the retail shelf and has many advantages, For example, the protective PVC outer shell, and the good card graphics will be accepted as a quality packaging solution by the consumer.
Skin packaging on the other hand is often used with lower-cost items and accessories. The lower quality print graphic capabilities of skin packaging do not lend themselves to high quality artwork. However, the flexibility of skin packaging makes it perfect for kits, and situations where there are a large number of different shaped parts to be packaged. One skin board with labels could theoretically accommodate an infinite amount of parts, where a blister package might require a different card, blister and sealing tool for each item.
There are several considerations you should use when deciding which packaging type would be best for your product:
• What will your product sell for? Higher priced items sell better with high end graphics. Blister packaging allows for better graphics
• What is the volume of your packaging production runs? If they are greater than 25,000 units then blister packaging may be the more cost-effective solution. Because the shell is pre-formed, the product slides into position easily, avoiding the need to orient and correctly place product. In addition, the cards are pre-cut before packaging
• What is the item that you are packaging? If it’s a single product with a low, simple shape, blister might be your choice. If it is oddly shaped, multiple different parts, or low need for graphics, skin packaging may be the best solution.
• Will your package be holding several different items in it, for example a kit? Skin packaging is a good format for this.
• Do you need some images or icons on your package to help explain what it is or what it does? Blister cards provide the best surface for printing clean graphics. A skin film covers the complete front surface of a skin card which can add a glare to the look.
