What can I do to make my air conditioner or heat pump last longer?

The number one thing to increase longevity of your equipment is to keep it clean.

Top priority is to change your filter regularly. Every one to three months depending on filter MERV rating and indoor air quality (smoking, pets, etc.).

One tip to keep the outdoor coil cleaner is to turn off the ac any time you mow the lawn. On dryer days this can prevent a lot of dust from collecting in the coil.

If you are feeling ambitious you can clean the outdoor coil with coil cleaner and water. DO NOT use a pressure washer as this can fold over and damage fins.

What is MERV rating on air filters?

MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values.

Basically tells you how good a filter is at catching small particles. A higher number means it will catch more and smaller.

While higher is generally "better" most duct systems you run across in residential aren't designed to handle the greater restriction that these filters create.

With this in mind feel free to experiment with what works best in your particular home.
