Complex joint preservation! George had a large osteochondral defect in his knee and underwent an osteochondral allograft 2 years ago. Unfortunately the OCA graft never incorporated and failed. This is a challenging problem in a young patient not ready for joint replacement.

Instead, Dr. Sando removed the old graft and performed a bone grafting with MACI procedure along with a high tibial osteotomy and meniscal allograft transplant to restore his alignment, meniscus cushion and articular cartilage. The MACI procedure involves growing the patients own cartilage cells and applying them to a membrane that is then transplanted back into the knee!

Osteochondroma excision!
Benign tumor of bone and cartilage - these are common on the distal femur and proximal tibia. They grow slowly and require no treatment unless they become so large that they began irritating surrounding muscle or tendons during movement. If they become painful, surgical excision provides the cure!

A few shots from a recent MACI procedure.

MACI, which stands for Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation, is a regenerative procedure that aims to repair damaged cartilage in the joints. Here's how it works:

1⃣ First, a small sample of healthy cartilage cells is collected from the patient's own knee through a minimally invasive procedure.

2⃣ These cartilage cells are then sent to a specialized lab, where they are multiplied and grown in a special matrix, creating a larger quantity of healthy cartilage cells.

3⃣ After a few weeks, the newly grown cartilage cells are implanted back into the patient's knee joint, where they integrate with the existing damaged cartilage and promote the healing process.

The result? Improved joint function, reduced pain, and a chance to regain an active and pain-free lifestyle!

We are proud to offer the MACI procedure as part of our commitment to providing the latest advancements in orthopedic care. If you're suffering from cartilage defects or injuries, MACI might be the solution you've been searching for. Reach out to us to learn more and see if you're a candidate for this transformative procedure.
