The guard glanced at Zyon and slowly lowered his sidearm. Before it was all the way down, Jasper had roundhouse kicked it out of his hand and thrown a fist into his throat. The guard sank to his knees choking.
“Whoa!” Yelled Zyon.
Jasper put both fists up to the left side of his chest as he side kicked the guard into unconsciousness.
“Don’t move,” said Jasper to Zyon. “I’m the one with the key out of here and we’re getting what we came for.” Then over his shoulder he said, “Astrid?”
The dark haired woman walked over to the sigil and began placing various nodes on the sigil and began pulling them into a three dimensional shape formed of multicolored lights. Within a few seconds the ground underneath Zyon started rising and he leaped off what became a large cube the same milky material and color as the room around them.
“I don’t know what’s going on here, but I’m starting to regret helping you,” said Zyon backing towards the lift door.
“If he takes another step,” said Jasper to Astrid, “shoot him in the leg. We may need him alive to get out of here.”
Zyon froze. Jasper slowly walked up to the chest and exhaled slowly. “I’ve been waiting a long… long time for this.” He placed a hand on the chest. The material melted back into the ground revealing a floating glassy sphere of clear liquid, and a man suspended, comatose in the middle.
“What the…” said Zyon.

“These days?” Asked Jasper.
“Sure,” said the Guard. “Look at this,” he said flicking something aside in his holo and then bringing up a shared informational display above the sigil.
“Meta data says this safe hasn’t been opened since 2155. That predates the dome. Hell, that predates the municipality of Kerwan Crater! Whoever stored this is long dead,” said the guard.
“Corporations never die,” said Jasper lowly. He traced the sigil with his finger and it vibrated with light. “I’ll need my associate to take a look at it.” Then turning to the side he put a finger to his temple and said, “Astrid, would you be so kind?”
“You won’t be able to make calls down here,” said the guard knocking on the stone. “It’s laced with a Molybdenum Faraday Cage. Impenetrable.”
Just then a woman appeared next to Jasper as though out of thin air.
“Whoa!” Yelled the guard and pulled his side arm. Jasper instinctively and calmly stepped between the guard and the woman.
“No need for that, she’s with me.”
The guard did not stand down. “I’m already risking my job letting you down here, Sir. Who is that?”
“This,” said Jasper evenly, “is Astrid. She is, in effect, my ship’s computer, housed in a bipedal chasis.”
“She’s,” the guard’s jaw was slackening, “She’s a robot?”
“She’s much more than that,” said Jasper.

The circular floor descended smoothy through the stone cylinder past countless doors. When it finally came to a gentle, hydraulically assisted stop the guard gestured at the door emblazoned with a pulsating “48v” above it and watched suspiciously as Jasper walked over to it. Jasper rubbed his thumb and forefinger together in a tiny circle at his side as he spun through the digital inventory in his holo, finally settling upon an encrypted key which presented itself in holographic form as an ancient game cartridge from Earth history. A slot superimposed itself in the wall of the otherwise smooth stone and Jasper inserted the key. To his relief, the door next to it shot up into the wall revealing a large room shaped like a slice of pie approximately 100 meters in diameter and perhaps 10 meters between the floor and ceiling. Numbers and letters covered the floor and walls like sigils, many arranged in odd shapes. Jasper’s holo quickly analyzed these and they flashed before him in the dimly lit room.
“Locate archive 48v.20k,” he muttered. He didn’t actually need to say the words, but it had become his habit on the lonely trek across deep space to treat his holo implant like a separate entity - something he noted to himself he should probably stop doing.
The layer of his eye which was both sensor and screen brought his attention to a pulsating sigil on the far wall. He walked over, aware that he was being closely flanked by both Zyon and the guard. When he stopped at the sigil he once again tried to select the cartridge from his inventory, but it was not there. He had assumed the cartridge was they key for both the vault room and the safe itself, but it was apparently still in the lift, keeping the door open for them.
He glanced at the guard who raised his eyebrows.
“Any chance you know how this thing works?”

Curly, acknowledging the transaction, nodded and said a bit rudely, “very kind sir.”
“Any time Curly,” said Jasper turning towards the street. He attempted to use his holo to overlay directions but his bio chip was demanding a firmware update. He stood there awkwardly for a moment.
“Trouble?” asked Zyon.
“Firmware update,” said Jasper.
“Really? A forced update? You must have been off world for a while.”
“Yea,” said Jasper without elaborating. “Listen you wouldn’t happen to know Deep Storage…”
“Intimately.”
“I mean... You know where it is?”
“Oh yes,” said Zyon.
Jasper nodded slowly and clasped his hands together.
“Ok then, nice meeting you.”
“I’ll take you, if you want to go. Was heading that way anyways.”
“Great. That would be great,” said Jasper flatly.
“Just tell me one thing. What is a Cevtech pilot doing on Ceres?”

“Really I’m responsible,” said the chair next to him.
Jasper coiled as a man decloaked his active camouflage next to him. He was as tall as Jasper with a strong nose and hypnotic eyes that were so calming they made the hair on the back of Jasper’s neck stand up.
“Hiding from someone?” Asked Jasper warily. He felt that he should have detected someone next to him, cloaked or not.
“Just some of the locals.”
“Oh? They don’t like travelers here.”
“We do, for the most part,” said the man.
“So you are local then.”
“Yes, didn’t I say so? I’m Zyon.” The man extended his hand.
“Jasper,” said Jasper, taking the man’s hand.
“Anyway, that was me,” he said gesturing with a thumb jerk to the nametag on Curly’s torso, “years ago when I was a kid.”
Jasper nodded. The droid seemed to take no notice and continued polishing glasses.
“Why Curly?”
“Can’t remember. Something to do with classic Earth cinema.
“Well, it suits him,” said Jasper transferring some credits to Curly and pushing himself off the bar.

He eventually reached a little dive called The Iridium Inn at the ground level of one of the megastructures. The barman was a droid named curly, which was evident by way of the fact that the one wheeled, brassy looking entity was wearing a seemingly ancient sticker nametag on its naked torso that said, “Hello My Name is Curly.”
Jasper put his weight on the bar and a finger in the air. Still looking down he said, “Hey Curly. Vodka.” Then he lifted another finger, “Double.”
Curly wheeled over, leaning slightly back as he did and faced Jasper saying simply, “My name is not Curly.”
“Well…” Began Jasper, but he was interrupted.
“This,” Curly gestured to his name-tag with spindly metal fingers that were tipped with something like tiny plungers, “is a horrid little practical joke played upon me by my so called patrons.” This last word was said with a healthy dose of menace.
“Well it looks like it’s been there a while. Why don’t you take it off?”
“It’ll smudge! You know these things are impossible to get off cleanly.”
“Curly, we are well into the space age. Surely we have the technology to…”
“No,” Curly cut him off again. “I’ve looked into it.”
“Ok, well you know what that makes you then?” asked Jasper.
“What?”
“Curly,” said Jasper folding his arms and leaning back on the nearest barstool.

We been doing a lot behind the scenes. We are excited to announce that our first animated music video wrapped up earlier this year and before we officially release it this summer, we sent it off to a few film festivals/competitions. We found out this morning that we’ve made it to our first Semi-final in the New York International Film Awards! We will find out if we move forward soon, so send us all the good vibes you can spare! Stay tuned this summer for the official release!
She remembered a grid power outage that had happened once when she was a child. There had been an emergency broadcast from the man in the tower. Instructions for the different work groups, an explanation: terrorists again; and a hopeful message about how they would work together as a city to solve the problem. That had made her feel safe. But now there was nothing. Just silence.
She looked from the blank monitor to the window, where lights were again beginning to turn on all over the city. Sleep cycle had evidently failed across the grid. That probably meant that no one else was getting the broadcast either. Instructions weren’t being received to fix the problem by humans or machines. With a sigh, she cautiously got up from bed and put on her work clothes.

Dez was the first awake the next morning. He surveyed the destruction of what he had ascertained was the Chancellor’s personal live-in broadcast station. It was impressive. Almost no machines had been left intact. His stomach rumbled, and he eyed the large metal door which seemed to be the only exit. There had been no sign of drones since the night before. The maddening clamor of their attempts to force entry had apparently been connected to some signal the PLSR crew had inadvertently disrupted in the chaos. His stomach rumbled again, louder this time. They would be dead soon anyways without something to eat. May as well just rip the bandaid off.

Cautiously, she pulled her hands from her lap and stood up. She walked to the far wall and drew back the curtains. All across the city lights were being turned on.
“What… is happening?” She breathed.
Someone screamed in the unit above. The girl waited for the telltale hum of a nurse drone, but nothing came. She dare not venture out of her unit unless they intercepted her. More lights came on all over the city until the entire grid was shining bright. She checked the time: 2 minutes till 10. Under normal circumstances neural lace would switch to Delta waves at the turn of the hour. If she wasn’t in bed by then she would be waking up on the floor with a crick in her neck tomorrow morning, and that was no way to deal with whatever was going on. She was an engineer after all, and it would probably be up to her section to fix this mess, whatever it was.

Each night of her life the girl had spent 2 hours just like this. Sitting quietly and alone, absorbing the events of the day. Milk rations were up by half, productivity within the textile industry was up by 7%, military triumph was guaranteed on the eastern front and so-and-so had been executed for misconduct, etc… She neither enjoyed this ritual, nor disliked it. It simply was the way things were. The same could be said for every aspect of her life. It was just ok. And that, she supposed, was ok.
So it was not without jarring effect when the monitor simply went blank, casting the room into darkness. She did not move at first, but her eyes widened. She tilted her head, but for the first time in her life she could not hear the broadcast. It was gone.
The silence was deafening.

The snow on an ancient monitor was the only light in the room. It neatly silhouetted the slim shoulders and thick wavy hair of the girl who sat in the middle of the floor. The floor was otherwise bare, so the girl sat on her knees facing the screen as if entranced.
The snow was not actually snow, like an old Television attempting to turn random signals into an image. It was a two-dimensional representation of machine code that was being translated at light speed by a neural lace in the girls brain and enhanced and maintained by a strict regimen of silicon supplements. Roughly translated from Old Russian, the common phrase went, “A dosage at 3 keeps the frequency clean.”
