“We wanted more comfortable seats, an area to make smoothies, and maybe even a game area,” PSLA at Fowler High School freshman Imani Martin shared. “Basically, anything to make lunch more fun. We have long classes, and lunch is really our only time to have a break during the day. It’s really nice that we can have a say in our school experience like this!”

This spring, students from all SCSD high schools submitted proposals for how they’d like to improve their school cafeteria space – thanks to a Participatory Budgeting activity led by the SCSD Office of Food and Nutrition Services. Their proposals were evaluated by both a rubric and a panel of volunteering community partners – who selected the final three projects. All SCSD high school students were invited to vote for the winning project… with the PSLA proposal winning by a landslide, receiving 330 of the 838 student votes received!

The group of students, supported by Abigail Linnertz, suggested a PSLA Lunch Lounge – with comfortable seating, nice décor, and a lounge feel. As the winning project, the SCSD team is already working to bring it to life – looking into comfortable seating options and murals that will warm up the space. The cafeteria should be updated for the upcoming school year! Congratulations to students Imani Martin, Samuel Alvarez, Anthony Rivera, ZaKaria Noor, Jihad Bolds, Connor Lehman, and Naim Anderson. Each student received a $70 gift card to Salt City Market for designing the winning project. We’re so proud of your efforts!

We’re so proud of all of our Class of 2024 ! This week, we’re spotlighting the top two academic performers in each SCSD high school. Stay tuned next week as we spotlight additional graduating seniors from each building!

PSLA at Fowler High School Salutatorian Timothy Sass, Jr. will be attending Syracuse University's Newhouse School, where he plans to study TV, Radio, and Film. In his freshman year, during COVID, he started helping his church livestream services and got interested in the media field. He has since started his own freelance media company – and hopes to ultimately become a Director of Photography.

“The day I turned 18, I went downtown and filled out my DBA (Doing Business As), a form that created my business entity,” Timothy shared. “I want to frame it in my office one day! The best thing I’ve learned over the course of my time in the SCSD is being able to prioritize what really matters to me. I’ve learned through trial and error that sometimes, the small things in life don’t matter. Ultimately, I hope to work on high-profile productions and sets where I can say a name and people will know it!”

We’re so proud of all of our Class of 2024 ! This week, we’re spotlighting the top two academic performers in each SCSD high school. Stay tuned next week as we spotlight additional graduating seniors from each building!

PSLA at Fowler High School Valedictorian Maria Mohamed will be attending Syracuse University, where she plans to study Mechanical Engineering.

“My dad is into cars and stuff, and it interests me, learning how they work. I’ve always loved building stuff!” Maris explained. “I’m looking forward to being able to study my intended major, and the safety of having that degree, no matter where life takes me. The best thing I’ve learned over the course of my time in the SCSD is that school is about more than friends. Focus on getting yourself to where you want to be. Don’t feel guilty or selfish for prioritizing yourself! My advice is to think about what you want to do before entering high school – there are so many opportunities open to you if you start on your path early. That said, don’t stress. You can always change your direction!”

We’re so proud of all of our Class of 2024 ! This week, we’re spotlighting the top two academic performers in each SCSD high school. Stay tuned next week as we spotlight additional graduating seniors from each building!

Nottingham High School Salutatorian James Saufley will be attending Cornell University, where he’ll be undeclared but plans to pursue studies in the math department – with ambitions of becoming a high school math teacher one day.

“My two major goals in life are to continue to explore and grow stronger in my religion, and to give back as a teacher – either here at Nottingham or in another city school district,” James shared. “My proudest moment in high school was helping to co-found the Christian Club. It hasn’t been running for close to 20 years, I think; and my sophomore year, I helped get it back up and running and I was able to help it grow. The best part of my high school experience has been being involved in so many different groups. Nottingham is such a diverse school with so many different people with different backgrounds – and the people here, the staff and administration, really care about us. They’ve really built us up.”

Nottingham High School Valedictorian Lucy Lombard will be attending Syracuse University, where she plans to study Psychology on a Pre-Med track – with ambitions of becoming an anesthesiologist one day.

“I had surgery on my knee, and I researched anesthesiologists and it seems like a fulfilling job where I can help others,” Lucy shared. “I hope to help people who are undergoing serious surgery. I want to be the one who helps patients get through a hard time in life. The teachers and faculty at Nottingham have been supportive and have prepared us so well to step into this next chapter. I feel prepared for college because of the rigors I’ve been through here at Nottingham!”

We’re so proud of all of our Class of 2024 ! This week, we’re spotlighting the top two academic performers in each SCSD high school. Stay tuned next week as we spotlight additional graduating seniors from each building!

We Are ITC Salutatorian Angelina Grevi will be attending Syracuse University to study Broadcast Journalism or Visual Communication – with the goal of working in sports, as a baseball or hockey announcer, photographer, or sideline reporter. She says her proudest moment was winning the Sherri Taylor First Amendment Award from the Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA) in 2023. It was the first time the award was given, and it is an anti-censorship award – marking her first big journalism award.

“It’s easy to say you want your name to be recognizable – but it’s not easy to get there!” Angelina shared. “I want to be a prominent media figure, like Mike Tirico or Michael Kay – but I want to do that and still be seen as Angie – as myself. Having access to the Media program and the studio at ITC has changed my path and solidified my interest in a career in sports. The best thing I’ve learned through my time in the SCSD is that everything pays off in the end. At the end of the day, you gain experience from everything you do. Work toward something that you’re proud of!”

We Are ITC Valedictorian Miranda Azemi will be attending Cornell University, where she plans to study Biological Science on a Pre-Med track – with ambitions of becoming a family physician one day.

“My family has struggled with health issues, and I want to be one of the ‘good’ doctors,” Miranda shared. “We need more than just smart doctors – we need doctors who are compassionate as well. I hope to open my own clinic to serve refugees and immigrants. My parents are former refugees, and I want to make sure that people in those situations have the opportunity to be healthy – that there is no gap in their care. My advice to other students is to surround yourself with people who will better you. Don’t settle for what’s fun but do what will set you up for success! The best part of my high school career has been the opportunities I’ve been gifted by my teachers, the SCSD, and the community. I know that my district and my teachers want to see me thrive!”

We’re proud of the 15 students who participated in this year’s Syracuse Youth Advisory Council, created by the Syracuse Common Council. The group is intended to help increase civic education and engage young people in local and state government. Students participated in a four-day, hands-on experience where they learned about local and state government and engaged with community and elected leaders. To wrap up their experience, students identified issues in the City of Syracuse, developed a plan to address them, and presented at a forum of elected officials. The students were recognized with a Certificate of Achievement. Congratulations to Henninger High School student Luxe Manzi; We Are ITC students Dwight Jones, Tristan Bey, Bryson Griffith, and Zhyleece Villarreal; Nottingham High School students Jeanine Nyamuhoza, Khaleeq Branker-Haygood-El, and Mariah Dawson; and PSLA at Fowler High School students Baraka Enock, Malasia Ray, Bashir Diriye, Christopher Dexter, Wesley Houde, Naw Paw, and Paw Ah Khee!
