The North Country is facing the statewide housing crisis head-on, and Plattsburgh, despite its smaller size, is no stranger to these challenges.

Like many other regions, it grapples with escalating rents and a shortage of affordable housing options.

Recent statistics reveal a concerning trend: over the past five years, the median rent in the Greater Plattsburgh area has surged by more than 15%, outpacing the growth in median household income.

This alarming reality is forcing many residents into financial uncertainty as housing expenses eat up a larger share of their earnings. The United Wayโ€™s ALICE report further sheds light on the difficulties faced by Asset Limited, Income Constrained, and Employed individuals in our community.

A significant factor driving Plattsburghโ€™s housing crisis is the scarcity of affordable and available housing units. The demand far exceeds the supply, resulting in fierce competition and leaving low and moderate-income families struggling to secure housing or meet other essential needs.

Another example is seniors, unable to downsize because of lack of stock also feel the strain, placing burdens on those living on fixed incomes. This is a multigenerational issue.

Moreover, the housing crisis has repercussions on workforce recruitment and retention. To foster community growth, itโ€™s crucial to expand our housing inventory in the region.

Plattsburgh, with its median age of 38 and a considerable portion of its population falling within the 20-34 age group, is poised for expansion. Addressing this crisis necessitates both immediate and long-term solutions.

The Town of Plattsburgh is committed to action, striving to cultivate a diverse economy that encompasses commercial, industrial, services, and housing options across all income levels, from Housing Choice Vouchers to market-rate housing.

Our historic investments of $24 million in a Water Capital Plan, updates to comprehensive land use plans, adoption of Smart Growth Plans enabling infill development in the Town Center, and revisions to subdivision regulations dating back to 1978 underscore our all-inclusive approach to addressing this issue.

Furthermore, the town is actively exploring innovative solutions such as mixed-income developments, integrating affordable housing units into market-rate complexes. This not only promotes socio-economic diversity but also prevents the concentration of affordable housing in isolated areas. Attention to specific housing needs for veterans, victims of domestic violence, and service housing is paramount.

However, addressing the housing crisis requires collaboration across all levels of governance and private sector. It is not solely the responsibility of town government.

Investing in infrastructure and public transportation in the North Country can unlock further housing opportunities and ease pressure on existing housing stock. Other critical investments, such as in childcare, are also necessary.

Recently, the Town of Plattsburgh was recognized by New York State as the First Pro Housing Community in Clinton County and one of only five in the North Country. To provide context, 551 units have been built in the last decade, with 283 units currently in progress. Our commitment to embracing home rule governance and community-supported planning is unwavering.

While progress has been made through a combination of short-term relief measures and long-term strategies, there is still much work to be done. Ongoing discussions with developers aim to further advance this effort, and our dedication to this cause remains steadfast.

There is no doubt that we face challenges, but in the face of them we say โ€œcome build a stronger future with us!โ€

Today was an inspiring day as I joined Governor Hochul and fellow municipal leaders from across New York at the State Capitol in Albany for a Pro-Housing Communities Roundtable. It's heartening to see such dedication to tackling housing issues across our state.

Governor Kathy Hochul celebrated the certification of New Yorkโ€™s inaugural Pro-Housing Communities, marking a significant milestone. Among the first 20 designated Pro-Housing Communities is the Town of Plattsburgh, making us the first in Clinton County to receive this recognition.

Amid New York's housing crisis, taking proactive steps is essential for sustainable growth and affordability. Governor Hochul's commitment to addressing this challenge is apparent in her ambitious plans. By incentivizing local governments, we can collectively pave the way for a stronger and more affordable future. The Town of Plattsburgh remains dedicated to prioritizing housing, without giving up Home Rule governance. With comprehensive land use plans, Smart Growth Plans, and updated subdivision regulations; we plan the work and work the plan. We have led over these last years and that work continues. We are proud to be designated a Pro Housing Community.

We join only four other North Country communities. Special shoutout to the town of Canton, the village of Canton, the town of Lowville and the town of North Elba.

The stateโ€™s first 20 Pro-Housing Communities include localities in the Long Island, Mid-Hudson, Central New York, Western New York, Mohawk Valley, Southern Tier, North Country, and Capital Regions. Pro-Housing Communities Will Receive Priority Consideration Over Other Localities for Up to $650 Million in State Discretionary Funds.

After today's event, I had a nice visit with Assemblyman Billy Jones at his office in Albany while they were in session. I appreciate his continued partnership on important issues like housing and infrastructure.

n Friday, I had the honor of presenting the Annual State of the Town of Plattsburgh at the North Country Chamber of Commerce's 'State of the County, City & Town' event. Our unwavering commitment to a community-centric vision continues to drive Plattsburgh forward, emphasizing the transformative impact of meticulous planning, strategic partnerships, and a steadfast dedication to shaping a resilient future.

Some highlights from the address include:

-Housing Initiatives-
With 283 housing units currently in progress, our dedication to fostering sustainable growth is unmistakable. Notably, the Town is poised to achieve the distinction of being the first community designated as a Pro-housing community in New York State, unlocking access to valuable state and private resources.

-New Development-
In the year 2023, we conducted an exhaustive review of over 608,000 square feet of new development, contributing an impressive value of $35 million. Additionally, our groundbreaking Developers Guide, a pioneering initiative and the first of its kind, builds upon the town's rich history of infrastructure investments and Smart Growth Plans, setting the stage for innovative and sustainable development. This strategic approach positions Plattsburgh for continued success and growth in the years to come.

CCC relocating campus to SUNY Plattsburgh by 2025 10/01/2024

In the spirit of the North Country, where resiliency is defined by our character of the community, weโ€™re going to roll up our sleeves and create new opportunities out of this unique set of challenges.

As a member of the University Council at Plattsburgh, a proud alumnus, and as the town supervisor, where Clinton Community has a home on the bluff, my sincere wish is for prosperity for both institutions and the broader region.

The current challenges to the higher education landscape, are palpable. We really need to look over to Potsdam within the SUNY system, or even look at St. Rose, a private institution, and recognize thereโ€™s a shifting dynamic occurring.

There is power in partnership. I truly believe that the collaboration involving the Chancellor, the SUNY system, Clinton Community College, SUNY Plattsburgh, and local stakeholders will enhance a shared services plan that allows for positive strides forward.

CCC relocating campus to SUNY Plattsburgh by 2025 Clinton County Legislature Chairman Mark Henry (R-Area 3, Chazy) clarified that this move is not a โ€œmergerโ€ of the two colleges, just a relocation for CCC.

I want to extend special gratitude to the Clinton County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police Troop B, both of which are based in our Town of Plattsburgh.

A thank you to the many other agencies in our community and region serving the North Country.

I deeply appreciate all the men and women who don the uniform, serving and protecting us across various law enforcement agencies, be it local, state, or federal.

Stay Safe!

Yesterday, I had the distinct honor of having Assemblyman Billy Jones, a dear friend, administer the Oath of Office as I embark on my third term as Plattsburgh Town Supervisor.

Taking the Oath of Office once again serves as a poignant reminder of the tremendous responsibility bestowed upon me. I am keenly aware of the profound duty to continue serving my community, approaching this role with utmost seriousness.

While there are challenges, my resolve is strengthened by the resilience of the people. To the residents of our town, I express sincere appreciation for entrusting me with significant responsibilities. I continue to pledge to tirelessly dedicate myself to listening, learning, and leading on your behalf.

The success and joy of the past eight years can be attributed in part to the remarkable individuals comprising the Plattsburgh Team, both elected officials and employees, as well as the countless others in the region who have become friends and partners.

One of the highlights of my role remains moments during grocery shopping when people feel comfortable approaching me with various matters. It's incredible how many problems have been solved or questions answered in the produce section at Hannaford. I have said time and time again local government is the closest to the people we serve.

Gratitude fills my heart as I express my thanks to my unwaveringly supportive wife, Olivia, who has stood by my side since the inception of this journey. I want to express deep gratitude to my wife, Olivia, for her unwavering support. Despite frequent night meetings and weekend events, she is understanding and encouraging, serving as my rock.

Introduced to a quote by poet, novelist, and editor John Boyle Oโ€™Reilly (1844-1890), I am reminded to "Be true to your word, your work, and your friend." My pledge is to continue doing my utmost each and every day.

Carrying these words as a guiding light, I am committed to the work ahead fueled by a genuine love for our town, and region ever working to ensure its prosperity and well-being.

The work continues!

Today is a day of reflection. The importance of Veterans Day is very personal to me. Both my grandfather and my sister-in-law Samantha and her husband Jeff) answered the call to serve. They like all Veterans are a great source of inspiration to me.

Over the last several years I have had the good fortune to be befriend by a number of local Veterans through our local American Legions, North Country Veterans Association and DAV Chapter #179. One such privilege was to get to know a special group of Heroes from North Country Honor Flight Flight #27 as Flight Leader. Each story is one of love of country, dedication and sacrifice.

Today I spent Veterans Day on the 11 Hour on the 11th Day on the 11th Month with with members of the VFW Post 125. It was a moving ceremony. Humbled to be asked to provide some more words. Updating our community on the Battlefield Memorial Gatewayt in honor our Veterans. Phase I is rapidly coming to a finish that will have the base infrastructure down and complete the Purple Heart Trail.

From my own family to meeting a new Veteran for the first time all of our Veterans inspire me by their example. We all owe a great debt of gratitude to the men and woman of our nation for their dedication, service and sacrifice. Let us find ways to honor them today and every day!

Happy Veterans Day! God Bless our Veterans. God Bless our Troops and God Bless the United States. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

My work is driven by and inspired by the people I serve โ€“ you! Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity.

After a two year hiatus the much-anticipated 54th Annual Cadyville Fire Department Field Day became a Two Day Summer Kick Off Spectacular andโ€ฆ it did not disappoint! These festivities are deeply rooted tradition in the Town of Plattsburgh that serves as our version of Old Homes Day comprised of the only parade in the town, field day activities for all generations, acts as an annual reunion of family and friends. The additional day of activities along with the evening of fireworks was outstanding.

The parade route is always a blast. It was great to see so many folks out. Though the peak of perfection getting some of the famous clam chowder and my favorite the water-ball tournament.
