Bishop Freeze on A “Sozo” Mission

Life is a journey we all have to endure but no one person’s story is the same. Dwayne Parker was born in October of 1966 in the small town of Bradenton, Florida and when he was 11 years old his family relocated to Tacoma, Washington. It was after this move and his mother meeting his violent and felonious stepfather that Dwayne’s life took a turn for the worse. Ju

st a year after moving to Washington, Dwayne and his four other siblings were dropped off at a family member’s house as his mother and stepfather ran from the law. Shortly thereafter, they were placed into foster care where they had to face physical and emotional abuse. A year and a half later, Dwayne’s grandmother came to get him and his siblings out of foster care and brought them back to live with her in Florida. They lived with their grandmother for about 18 months and Dwayne loved it – he was back home in the Sunshine State, enjoying life as a young boy. However, the seemingly sunny sky quickly turned dark again when Dwayne’s mother and stepfather came back to get him and his siblings and took them back to Washington. Like many young children, Dwayne was easily influenced by his surroundings and the people in his life and found himself drawn to life in the streets of Hilltop Tacoma. By the age of 14, Dwayne’s stepfather had taught him how to hold and shoot a gun, sell drugs, steal, and commit various other crimes, and a life of wrongdoing became second nature to Dwayne. Over the course of the next four years, Dwayne spent majority of his juvenile life committing crimes and in and out of detention centers. He became known on the street as his self-proclaimed nickname, “Freeze”. When he was 20, Dwayne got involved in the gang life and eventually became the leader of one of the worst gangs in Washington, being dubbed as “OG Freeze”. For the better part of the next 13 years, Dwayne was in and out of prison. By 2000, Dwayne had done and seen enough to realize that the life of crime was not one he wanted to continue to follow. One October night while in his prison cell, Dwayne was drawn into repentance by God. He got on his knees in fervent prayer and surrendered his life to Christ, asking the Lord to come into his heart and change him from his wicked ways and break the curse of sin, crime, violence and gangs in his life. From that day forward, the man known as “OG Freeze” was no more and the reformation of the man to become “Bishop Freeze” had started. Dwayne was due to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole, however, when he stood before a judge in court just 15 months after that life-changing moment in his prison cell, he was only sentenced to 3 years. Bishop Freeze began to see his life turn around and he started to live by the mottos “crime to Christ, “gangs to God”, and “from prison to praise”. After being released from prison in 2003, Bishop Freeze joined Youth for Christ and started SOZO (which means salvation), an inner-city, outreach ministry in Hilltop Tacoma – the same community where he was the leader of a gang over 15 years prior. His passion and love for music and the Lord ran deep, so Bishop Freeze found a way to intertwine the two and also started his own music label, SOZO Music. Through music and other various art forms, Bishop Freeze promotes the good news, the truth, the Gospel, and positivity to and through youth and encourages them to use their gifts and talents to reach other lost youth needing hope. To date, he has released over 25 Christian rap albums and produced a short film called TRULIFE, a movie challenging youth to stop the violence and to help break the cycle of crime, violence, and gangs. In 2011, God called Bishop Freeze to Florida and it was there that he started SOZO Missions. Similar to the SOZO in Washington, Bishop Freeze founded SOZO Missions with the vision to see spiritual transformation in urban youths, their families, and their communities by sharing the love of Christ and engaging them in a life of positivity. He currently oversees SOZO Missions in the Manatee County, FL area and puts on weekly faith-based clubs where children and teens in the local communities can come have a meal together, play games, and grow more in their faith. Bishop Freeze and his team of adult leaders mentor youth, provide one-on-one counseling, and conduct small “life groups” in which youth learn important life skills. Bishop Freeze also oversees a program where he goes into juvenile detention centers on a monthly basis to help reach troubled youth. He is currently working to expand SOZO Missions into other states and countries, like Seattle and Kenya Africa, where the need for faith-based, outreach programs is in great demand. Bishop Freeze continues to passionately share his faith, giving back to his community, helping transform young lives one at a time, and breaking the cycle of poverty, gangs, crime, and violence and creating a culture where youth can thrive…in Christ.

Our organization created and produced a short film, called TRULIFE. This film is challenging youth to STOP THE VIOLENCE and PUT DOWN THE GUNS. We want to help them break the cycle of crime, violence, and gangs. It depicts how our youth today are getting involved in drugs, gangs, social media dis-rapping and crime, and how their bad choices lead them to being another statistic in the justice system or, even worse, dead. Our goal is to introduce them to a life of positivity, with hope to transform their lives and lead them to Christ. This film is a must see for all inner-city youth. I have finally...(seriously, no jokes)...retired from rapping! Yes. On New Year’s Eve 2022, I performed at my last concert and officially hung up my hat as a CHH artist. (I’m for real this time y’all). After 30+ years and 24 albums, I think I am done jumping around on stage and running out of breath. I am passing on the torch to my SOZO youth and other local CHH artists who have been given the gift of rhymes (and still have the energy to keep the crowd hype). But don’t worry, I am still in the trenches, leading and directing the SOZO ministry (with the Lord as my head), casting vision and continuing the important work of leading our lost youth to Jesus...and I will continue doing just that until the day the Lord brings me home. To date, he has released several solo albums – My Testimony, Praise Him, The King In Me, The Baptism, Stand up Speak Out, Sozo Kids - Do Yo Jook – as well as two compilations of various artists entitled Sozo Soljaz Volume 1 & 2. In 2011, God called Bishop Freeze to Florida and it was there that he started Sozo Missions. Similar to the Sozo in Washington, Bishop Freeze founded Sozo Missions with the vision to see spiritual transformation in urban youths, their families and their communities by sharing the love of Christ and engaging them in a life of positivity. He now runs Sozo Missions in Bradenton and Sarasota, Florida communities. There is a Sozo faith-based team club that is held three days a week where kids and teenagers in the communities can come have a meal together, play games, and learn about Jesus. Bishop Freeze and his team of adult leaders mentor youth, provide one-on-one counseling, and conduct small “life groups” in which youth learn important life skills. Bishop Freeze also runs a program where he goes into juvenile detention centers on a monthly basis to help reach troubled youth. He is currently working to expand Sozo Missions into other states and countries, like Detroit and Kenya Africa, where the need for faith-based, outreach programs is in great demand. Bishop Freeze continues to passionately share the love of Christ, giving back to his community, helping transform young lives one at a time.
