All Things Metal
Small business specializing in machining. Taking on large and small jobs alike with attention to detail
Some steering rod bearing fit repairs. One end had additional damage from a saw where it had to be cut out. Some Silicon Bronze tig build-up and it's good to go again for a while. Both ends finished within .0001 of target.
Shapr3d featured some of my machine work and modeling on their Instagram and page. It's been a wonderful app and tool for many many jobs I've taken in.
Why use a plug and hose clamp when you can make a shop project out of it? Fun way to fill in some free time between jobs and bad weather.
New tool day in the shop. Boring bars, scale, indicator, grinding wheel and hub, punch former. I'll share a video in a separate post with more detail. It's 5 minutes so skip it if you want.
Another knuckle build up, bore and face. Short window for turnaround so machinery running at 4:30 on a Saturday morning. Not all bad, I was done by 7:30.
Got started on a model to build a print off of this evening between repairs. Taking advantage of a cool part while I can. Back to the torch and continue the repairs and build-up tomorrow morning. Once the casting is hot it stays that way a long time.
Not my best work but a functional part again. I left out the pic of the buildup on purpose because it looked like bird crap. More pics to follow, I've still got the fit for the tie rod and one more knuckle just like this one.
Finished prepping some 304 SS plates today. Need to order some more inserts.
Cleaning some of the damage out of the fingers for the little brake. I don't need the finish but if you're getting it take it.
When your lathe is too short, don't have a horizontal boring mill and the job must go on.
The WORST magnetism I've ever seen in a piece of 4140 TGP. All my tools will be making a trip across the demagnatizer tomorrow when I finish.
Horizontal case boring on the Acra mill with the .
Perpindicularity on the grinder was proving to be a challenge as seen with the .0005 TIR on the bench. I worked my setup and shims around many times when I settled at that. The last person to grind was apparently satisfied with .0045 and .006 TIR. The original 2 had .001 and .0002. I improved on 3 and will let the last one go since I cant seem to get any better out of my old Reid.
New tool day at All Things Metal! Scored a couple boring and facing heads. Not perfect condition but I got 2 for the price of one so I'll live with it.
More case work.
Never had 2 of these accessory housings clean the same. Original machined surfaces are all over place. Pulled an average of .009 to clean the dish and scoring out of the center.
Short description.... these are bandages to repair a pipe sleeve that is slotting itself out where the pin goes through.

Doesn't need to be this flat, but had an opportunity to use the surface grinder. What a finish!
I decided it was time to make mounts for the heat shield on the motorcycle. New exhaust is burning my pant leg at stoplights
Finished up some modified tachometer covers. Mechanical tachometer is gone and electronic replaces it.
New tool day at the home shop, . Getting closer to a full selection of pin gauges through 1 inch. Finally got a full (new) set of silver and deming drills. Also a new draw bar, center drills, Noga de-burring tools and an end mill sharpening fixture for the surface grinder. @ Palmer, Alaska
Some repeat work on airplane parts. Lightening more cylinders and and reconditioned a total of 3 oil pump decks. Bored one wide deck conversion but didn't take pics of that one.
Trimming some unneeded weight off of this flywheel. In think it's out of another but not sure. It was a little different than the others. Had to run the slitting saw way too slow to keep it from singing so loud.
Here's a short clip of the fixture I made and what it's intended purpose is. You'd think this would be easier than it is. Plow a reamer the size you want (minimum of 4 steps) through a hole and there you have it! Well after you figure in thermal expansion, tool wear, chip load, lubrication, feed rate and finish you might just get what your after. Oh and do it all fast enough to make money and not rob the customer.
Some days a piston and other days a pike! Up until a week ago I couldn't tell you what a Force Pike was...... actually I still can't, but from a picture off the Internet and at the request of a guy in need of one, here it is. Pictures don't do it justice, it's pretty cool!
There it's is! The fixture for over sizing rod bolts. Now just waiting for the reamers and barrel lap.
Reduce a little performance this morning and making mods for more ponies tonight on a different project! More pics to follow.
Sometimes your hotrod can be too hot! Made these 11:1 pistons into 10:1. They were stretching cylinder studs.
So this job didn't pay too well! It was actually for me. One hard spill last weekend on a ride up towards the Knik glacier quickly removed my light from my bars. So..... I made a new mount!
Well its been a couple weeks since I've shared anything. Here's what I've been working on the last couple of days. It's for locking onto studs (intake/exhaust) that are hard to get to. Not a huge issue on most days but at the request of the customer this will get to the hard to reach studs they're doing battle with.

If you have some time to kill this is a great video of where it all began!
Bike parts yesterday and car parts today. Brake drums from a 39 Ford. Thanks John and we'll see you on the next project.

Today's post brings you more custom bike swag! Non-drive side axle sockets.
Is your axle stuck in your fat bike hub? WELL LUCKY YOU!! If it is we can make your special tooling and like my case possibly save the axle. Oh Happy Day!
Maybe you need a fixture so you can do your own drilling or machining? Let's talk over the details and make something that suits your needs.
You need pilots for your valve guides in your Lycoming? I can cover that too.
