Behavior that is rewarded is likely to be repeated. We often focus on the behavior that we don't want to see. Catch behaviors that you like and reward them. Walking nicely on a leash, ignoring the ringing door bell, quietly walking by barking dogs, greeting guests politely, and even just being a good big brother like Seamus.

So proud of Luce navigating the gauntlet that is the Cape in July. Lots of practice ignoring bikes, scooters, dogs, kids, landscapers. Healing through crowds. She has mastered checking in with me on her own which I reward every time. Remember to walk with treats every time so you can reward behavior that you like and practice behaviors you are working on. Make sure you use heeling when needed but give them plenty of time to sniff and explore.

Introducing… Poppy’s Fund

Thank you all for your kind words of support for our beloved Poppy. You all followed her story from her x-rays and brain scan, visit to the eye doctor and her first grooming. You saw her get socialized with kids and other dogs, and you helped us to name her. She was special to the rescue and the Lagotto Romagnolo Dog Rescue community.

Poppy sustained a brain injury that caused blindness. We had hoped she would regain at least some of her sight one day and find her forever home. We are sorry to report that although it appeared she regained partial sight, she developed several other maladies that caused her to live in a constant fearful state which was not compatible with a good quality of life. Ultimately the veterinarian said she wasn’t adoptable, so she was placed in hospice foster. Her hospice volunteer continued to love her even though we knew it was a temporary journey that would end in heartache.

Poppy is just one of many dogs that come into the rescue in need of medical care. And, as you all probably know, veterinary care is not cheap. We are sometimes able to get discounted care from veterinarians, but that is an extremely rare benefit and still isn’t enough. To that end, we have started a fund to help cover the costs we incur for these dogs. We have named our fund Poppy’s Fund so that she will live on with the rescue. Poppy’s fund will help provide much needed medical care for our dogs from vaccines, to special testing to medications.

Your donation can have a direct effect on the lives of these dogs. A donation of only $10 will help with a nail trim, $50 will help with medications, $100 will help with lab testing, $500 will help with spay/neuter surgery.

She took a piece of all of us with her. We want her memory to live on and we want to be able to help the next medically challenged Lagotto that comes into the rescue. Our promise to you is to provide updated posts about how your donations are put to work in the rescue for dogs in need of medical care.

We are grateful for your support and hope you can find your way to donate to help us in our mission to preserve and protect this magnificent breed. You can donate at the link below. Thank you.

Do Training Methods Matter? The Wrong One Can Cost Dogs Their Lives 20/03/2024

Do training methods matter? Absolutely!

Do Training Methods Matter? The Wrong One Can Cost Dogs Their Lives The science supporting positive-reinforcement dog training is abundant. It's more effective and more humane than force-training. Here's why.

20/03/2024

Are you looking for a puppy? Follow these guidelines to make sure you are purchasing from a reputable breeder.

*Do your research to make sure you choose a breed that will fit in with your lifestyle.
*Breeders should require a thorough application process.
*Be patient and be prepared to wait.
*Make sure the whole family is on board with the decision to bring a dog into the home.
*If you have another pet, make sure bringing a new pet into the home will not be detrimental to your existing pet.
*Do not buy littermates.
*Plan to attend a training class or hire a private trainer who uses positive methods.

A responsible breeder:

*Will only sell puppies to people they meet in person. Beware of breeders who will import from another country.
*Will want you to visit and spend time with the parents of the puppies - at least the mother.
*Is willing to show you where the puppies and dogs are kept.
*Houses their dogs and puppies in a clean, safe, environment and they are not constantly confined to cages.
*Will do expansive socialization.
*Does not always have puppies available and specializes in only 1 or 2 breeds.
*Will register all their dogs with the American Kennel Club (AKC). Beware of other registrations.
*Will offer you support and guidance for the life of your dog.
*Will charge $3000-$7000 for a Lagotto Romagnolo .
*Performs testing for genetic conditions specific to that breed on their breeding dogs.
*For the Lagotto Romagnolo testing includes:
Benign Familial Juvenile Epilepsy
Lagotto Storage Disease
Hips and elbows certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for
Animals (OFA)
Patellas certified by the OFA
Eyes certified by a board certified ophthalmologist
Basic cardiac health certified by a board certified
cardiologist

A Poppy Update!

Poppy came to LRDR as a wee 1 month old baby who had a brain injury. The air on her brain caused her to lose her vision and have no control of her urine.

Now that she is about 8 months old, she has about 60% control of her urine! She also appears to have either mapped the house, yard and neighborhood, or, she’s gaining some vision!

Poppy will be staying as a Hospice Foster with a LRDR Foster volunteer. At the suggestion of multiple veterinarians, she isn’t fit for adoption.

We will keep her happy, comfortable and loved. Her foster family is amazing and LRDR and Poppy are forever grateful for all the time, energy and love poured into this cute girl.

To find out more about how you can help LRDR either through volunteering or donating, please see our website: www.lagottodogrescue.org

🐾 We are looking for a new team of social media volunteers 🐾

My 2-year term comes to an end in February 2024.

I’m still a great supporter of LRDR and will always just be a call/text away.

And if any of you are at the dog shows, please come say hi. We compete in conformation, agility and Juniors. We’ll always be happy to share our knowledge and help where we can.

The LRDR media position is fun and rewarding as you’ll get to know and post about the available dogs plus updates.

If you’ve already submitted an application, please just send us a message reminder.

New applications can be submitted at www.lagottodogrescue.org
