Bedrock Wine Co. Old Hill Ranch Heritage Red 2022
Winemaker Notes
They started working with Old Hill in 2018, and every vintage has surpassed my lofty aspirations for the site and has been one of the best wines in the cellar. What I think I love most is how much the “Old Hill” character marries with the vintage character. The 2018 is fresh and perfumed and will be long-lived, just like the best wines of the vintage. The 2019 shows the beautiful fruit weight and lushness of the vintage. The 2020 shows exotic spice and structure and remarkable elegance given the warm year. The 2021, a classic “drought” year, shows the massive density and structure that should make it a monumental wine for many years. In this same fashion, the 2022 shows both the amplitude and weight of fruit but also the great line and suavity that comes from most of the growing season being so temperate before the heat in early September. From a field-blend of 30+ varieties planted in the 1880s, this is once again one of the best wines of the vintage. (97 Wine Spectator)

Raj Parr’s 2023 Scythian Wine Co. “Cucamonga Revolution” Rosé, Cucamonga Valley, California, USA
70% Zinfandel and 30% Palomino from the Lopez Vineyard, planted in 1912. The vines are planted on sandy granite soils and are dry farmed and never sprayed or treated in any way. The grapes were harvested by hand and fermented whole cluster in open-top neutral fermenters, then rested in old French oak barrels. A small amount of SO2 was added after malolactic fermentation. Bottled without fining, filtering.
Scythian Wine Co. is a new project from sommelier-turned-vigneron Raj Parr that highlights the nearly lost viticultural heritage of Los Angeles. Before prohibition, the city was the center of the California wine industry, producing highly regarded wines from varieties like Palomino, Mission, Garnacha Tintorera and Zinfandel planted on sandy soils. A few of these own-rooted, dry-farmed, vineyards endure, largely due to the stewardship of the Galleano family. With a few collaborators, Raj Parr started exploring, then rehabilitating, some of the most interesting plots of these vines in 2019. The vineyards are relics, sandwiched between warehouses, corporate headquarters, neighborhoods and highways around Los Angeles County. The vines are almost all over 100-years-old, and none of the vineyards have ever been treated with pesticides fungicides, or even sulfur or copper. From these marvels of endurance and survival, Raj makes low-intervention wines in a small cellar near Boyle Heights, working with minimal additives and neutral vessels. The Scythian Wine Company wines are a fascinating opportunity to taste a fundamentally different side of the history of California wine.

Located at the gateway of Napa Valley along its main artery, Highway 29, Ashes & Diamonds Winery is a love letter to Napa Valley as it was when it took the world stage in the 1960s, revealing itself as a geological wonderland capable of world-class wines. In homage to this golden era and its pioneers, winemakers Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden Seysses, with proprietor Kashy Khaledi, adhere to an ethos of light-handed winemaking and transparency of terroir as a guiding light for all of the wines they produce—a Burgundian approach to Bordeaux varietals.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy New Year’s Eve. We are open today until the end of dinner service.
