Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start to summer here at the Jersey Shore! The Brick Township Police Department would like to remind everyone itβs the law to stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. New Jersey State Law 39:4-36: Drivers of motor vehicles shall stop for pedestrians who are within a crosswalk.
A driver shall not pass or overtake another vehicle that is stopped at a crosswalk when the stopped vehicle is permitting a pedestrian to cross the roadway. Those who violate the law are subject to a $200.00 fine.
Bicycles are not considered pedestrians and the law accords the same rights and responsibilities to bicyclists as drivers of motor vehicles. Bicyclists are also required to stop and/or yield to pedestrians crossing within a crosswalk. Bicyclists should walk their bicycles if using crosswalks.
