What is core vocabulary?
AAC core words are words that are commonly used every day in augmentative and alternative communication. They make up 80% of what we say! They include words like; who, more, stop, want, like. These words help people to express basic wants and needs. We love helping our clients learn new core words!!
We are pleased to introduce Kendall Hershman, a recent graduate of UNC-Greensboro with a BS in Communication Sciences and Disorders, as the newest member of our team. She will pursue her Master's in Communication Sciences and Disorders while working as a Speech Language Pathology-Assistant. Kendall brings with her experience as an RBT and we are jumping for joy to have her join us! She has openings for clients in the morning and afternoons.

Chelsea Webber is a Speech-Language Pathologist, who completed her ASHA certification in our Greensboro office and is open for new clients in the Raleigh area. Chelsea received her master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from East Carolina University in December 2022. Chelsea has 14 years experience in the field of speech thanks to her lovely teenage boys. To know Chelsea’s skill set is to know her boys. Andrew was a late talker who used baby sign and exhibited great frustration until his first words around age 4 then struggled through articulation difficulties, a sensory processing disorder, ADHD/anxiety/autism and is now the most talkative and creative beautiful young man. Oliver is a complex medical child by definition but calls himself “Batman” because it’s the technology that gives him his super powers. From early picture symbols, eye gaze, basic sign, two choice buttons on an ipad, and a variety of language apps, Oliver was communicating in some form or other way before he received his first “talker”. He uses his eye-gaze AAC device of 9 years to sing to the radio, make up jokes, babysit his little brother, and call family via Siri or Alexa.
If you’re in the Raleigh area and have AAC needs, give us a call.
May 3rd- National Speech Language and Hearing Month
Many parents have questions about their child’s speech, language, or social communication skills but are often told by family, friends, or even other professionals to wait and see if their child outgrows a potential problem. Unfortunately, this often results in a delayed diagnosis of a disorder that is highly treatable—particularly when caught early.
Here are some signs of a speech or language disorder in a young child (age 3 and under):
• Does not smile or interact with others (birth and older)
• Does not babble (4–7 months)
• Makes only a few sounds or gestures, like pointing (7–12 months)
• Does not understand what others say (7 months – 2 years)
• Says only a few words (12–18 months)
• Says words that are not easily understood by others (18 months – 2 years)
• Does not put words together to make sentences (1.5–3 years)
• Produces speech that is unclear, even to familiar people (2–3 years)
