When someone asks, “how are the flies?”
I don’t know, ask ‘em yourself!
Yep, it’s fly season at Pictured Rocks. 🪰
Stable flies, which inflict painful bites, are a staple at Pictured Rocks during the summer months, and it’s anyone’s guess as to when they “go away” for the season. They are most abundant on warm days with a wind from the south, as this pushes them onto the lakeshore from the forests south of us.
What can you do to avoid the flies?
🪰 Wear long pants! Check out all the flies on Ranger Daniel! Stable flies love to bite below the knee. Wearing sturdy, long pants can help you steer clear of bites.
🪰 Try a bug net. Bug nets that go over your head can be a hike-saver!
🪰 Don’t rely on sprays. Stable flies are not deterred by bug sprays like mosquitoes are. Long pants are the best way to keep them off of you.
Stay safe out there! And don’t like the stable flies bite!

𝗣𝗢𝗩: You’re wondering how you can take responsibility for your safety on Isle Royale.
Lake Superior and Isle Royale’s wilderness present challenges and hazards. The best, safest, and most enjoyable trips to Isle Royale are all grounded in good planning and preparation.
If only there was a guide to help you prepare, learn what to expect, and consider how you will take responsibility for your safety. Oh wait… there is!
The Isle Royale For Your Safety Guide can help you arm yourself with the best information to ensure a great visit.
✅ Know Before You Go
Emergency services on-island are extremely limited, and contacting rangers can be difficult. Emergency response and evacuation take time, requiring you to rely on your own skills and equipment. Cell phone service is unreliable – do not depend on it.
✅ Play It Safe
Plan ahead by making a conservation trip plan, being first aid ready, mitigating potential problems, and prepping your gear.
✅ Protect Your Park
Help Isle Royale Stay Wild by observing quiet hours, minimizing use of fires, and following Leave No Trace guidelines.
✅ Share the Space
Respect wildlife. Observe, photograph, and enjoy park wildlife from a safe distance.
