Our next “why phi?”: Reno Ruiz!
“When I first joined Phi Mu Alpha, my intentions towards the fraternity were much different than they are today. I was initially approached about joining, didn’t take it seriously, and I never thought I’d want to be a part of something like that. I found it ridiculous. Though, as I started to meet more members, it piqued my interest so much that I decided to join. Since then, Phi Mu Alpha has grown into a substantial part of my life. It has not only given me a network of brothers across the country, but more importantly it has given me a way to live my life. Although it sounds cliche, Phi Mu Alpha is more than a fraternity. I felt seen, I felt heard, I felt loved by my brothers. They gave me reason to keep going and pushed me to be the best every single day. To me, “Why Phi?” is not a easy question to answer; I can’t see my life without it, as Sinfonia has molded me into the man I am today. Every accomplishment I have gotten in college can be attributed to Phi Mu Alpha. Without this fraternity, my life would be completely different. Joining Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia was the best decision I could’ve made in my freshman year of college, and was the best decision of my life.”

Today’s “Why Phi?”, featuring Hayden Braafladt!!
“I joined Phi Mu Alpha because I wanted to join an organization that would work to spread the word of music, just as I have sought to do for years with marching band! Sinfonia has given me a place to work for others, be a good person and have brothers to look out for and to support. I have loved every second with Zeta sigma and I’m grateful for all my brothers. Every single one of my brothers has helped me tremendously and they have shown me that Phi Mu Alpha is more than just a club, it’s a calling and a brotherhood. I’ve been shown the true meaning of care and compassion through my brothers. This group of excellent men has helped me grow into a true man and I couldn’t be more thankful for them.I’m excited to start this next school year as brotherhood chair so we can all have fun events together and grow closer as brothers. I love you Zeta Sigma!! OAS AAS LLS!!”

Hayden’s been busing studying abroad and being a tourist in Japan. “I’ve been here for a bit more than a month, I’ve been to Kyoto, Shibuya, shinjuku, Roppongi, Akihabara, Harajuku, arishiyama, and a few others. I’m studying modern digital systems and circuits. A few highlights have been the monkey park, Universal with Super Nintendo World, and mount Inari.”
Another Zeta Sigma Active, Jacob Huffaker, is also on this trip with him!

Summer of Brothers, featuring Elias Jordan! Elias has been very busy this summer; he visited his family in Kentucky, went to the Bonaroo music festival, and went to both the Chicago Symphony play Mahler 9 and a Pat Metheny concert! Featuring an alumni of ZS, Edgar Quintanilla! This summer Edgar has the opportunity to work at the Texas Tech Museum as a clothing curator. “Working at the Museum of Texas Tech has been so fun for me. It's filled with people who have so many different fields of expertise that if you're not learning something on a daily basis, you're doing something wrong. Working the Clothing and Textiles Division has been particularly fun (and appropriate) for me. In my short time here I've helped put up an exhibit (First Ladies of Texas Tech), got to curate my first mini satellite exhibit in the South Plains Mall (Winter and Autumn Fashion of the 50s and 60s), and getting to work on a large gallery exhibit for October (From Rhinestone to Denim: Women of the Saddle). I've also gotten to meet some of the people the clothes we exhibit belong to like Sally Murray (Wife to a former Texas tech president) and Hailey Frederiksen (former Miss Rodeo America)”.
Edgar also was a harp instructor for the Band and Orchestra camp in July!

Our first Zeta Sigma alumni feature, James Gauna!
James went to the Baltic states in Europe with the TTU University Choir, where they sang at various cathedrals around the region!
James said his favorite experience on this trip was being able to get closer with the members of choir through music. The last slide also features brother Jake Hemmle and our faculty advisor Clint Barrick!

Featuring our current president, Reno Ruiz!
Reno recently went to the conference in Pittsburgh as a scholarship recipient! He was able to meet lots of great people, including his future employer! Congrats to Reno for getting the Major Gifts position for the Plano Symphony!! He will begin remotely in the fall as he finishes up his degree for Music BA and a minor in Arts Entrepreneurship.
Reno also got to spend some time with his girlfriend while in the Dallas area, where they went to see Hadestown and see the new Taylor Swift eras tour exhibit in Arlington!
