Reporting to DelDOT on the traffic stopping vehicle fire on I-95 this morning.
Change of command as Lt Tom Stoltz relieved Major Richard Travalini as CAP Dover Delaware Senior Squadron Commander.
Early morning DelDOT flight with Casey.
Yesterday, the Delaware Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, participated in a mission, supporting the New Castle County Office of Emergency Services, near Blackbird Creek Reserve, Townsend, Delaware. Approximately 37 senior members and cadets responded on short notice to assist in clearing tree debris from a recent tornado. All necessary precautions were taken to protect against the spread of COVID-19. Safety, as always, was paramount and an excellent safety briefing was given by our Wing Safety Officer, both before and after the mission.
We often hear how our younger generation is selfish and only care about themselves. Our cadets performed admirably and received a hands-on example of service to others. I'm very proud of our CAP Cadets and our Character Development Program.
Our next squadron Virtual Meeting invitations are in the mail for 8 September at 1900 hours.
Doing our best to stay connected during this pandemic.
Finally got them hung up. By the way, the duck wasn't an award.
Members of the Civil Air Patrol gathered yesterday at the Veterans Memorial in Rehoboth Beach to honor four of our members who sacrificed their lives during WW II attacking German Submarines off of the Delaware coast. (Pictured left to right: Major Lauren Wallace, Major David Morrow, Lieutenant Colonel Patricia Limmer, Major Richard Travalini, First Lieutenant Walter Myers) Not pictured: Lt Chuck Obst and Captain Bill Trussell (photographers). Please note, social distancing was practiced and masks were worn.
A special thanks to Maj Morrow, Squadron Commander of Coastal Patrol Base #2 Memorial Composite Squadron, Georgetown who provided the flowers.
Fellow CAP members and special friends,
As you know, this weekend we honor our fallen military who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. This is a somber occasion. But did you know that this also includes the Civil Air Patrol?
Every year, we place a wreath at the CAP monument in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware that commemorates the four CAP pilots who gave their lives while flying armed combat missions off of the Delaware coast against German submarines. These submarines had been sinking our merchant ships since the beginning of the war and in one month, sank over 50 ships. Our military was depleted after WW I and was unable to fully protect our ships. That's why the Civil Air Patrol was formed. Unfortunately, we are unable to continue this long tradition this year.
So, attached are some pictures from last year, 2019.
Just like today, these brave pilots were unpaid civilians volunteers. Today, we fly CAP aircraft. But during WW II, they were flying their own small private planes armed with bombs and depth charges. Obviously, their planes were never designed for that and the pilots were not trained for it either. Yet, they did it anyway. A special thanks to Squadron Commander, Major David Morrow for continuing this proud tradition in recent years and all previous commanders of Coastal Patrol Base 2, Memorial Composite Squadron, now located in Georgetown, Delaware.
Please forward this to all members and friends so these brave pilots are not forgotten.
