STOP THE USE OF STARVATION AS GENOCIDE! Other Avenues has signed on to the International Coalition to Stop Genocide in Palestine letter spearheaded by ICSGP member organization the Union of Agricultural Work Committees (in Palestine) denouncing the Israeli occupation’s use of starvation as a tool of genocide in Gaza.Β

Further, in alignment with the BDS movement, Other Avenues is boycotting Israeli goods and services as well as committing to source Palestinian products. We are donating to Palestinian solidarity events/organizations as well as committing to collaboration with other coops on this ongoing issue.

To read the full sign on letter, see comment section. Excerpt below:

β€œThe Israeli occupation's systematic destruction of Palestinian food systems, deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure, and obstruction of humanitarian aid constitute egregious violations of international law and fundamental human rights principles. We call on all states and international institutions to undertake any and all action possible including sanctions and arms embargoes to bring an immediate end to the obstruction of humanitarian, life sustaining, and life-saving supplies to Palestinians in Gaza, to investigate all state and non-state actors who have directly and indirectly participated in the obstruction and/or destruction of supplies to Gaza, and we ask that the campaign to de-fund UNRWA be investigated as a possible act toward furtherance and facilitation of starvation and/or genocide. [...] The disruption and destruction of Palestinian food systems by the Israeli occupation exacerbate the dire situation in Gaza and are not merely intended to starve the population in the short term. The current deliberate targeting by Israel of agricultural lands, livestock, and fishing boats (a genocidal intensification of 75 years of brutal settler colonial occupation that has denied Palestinians their right to self-rule) further undermines the ability of Palestinians to access and produce food, and is intended to ensure their ongoing poverty and malnutrition, and deny them the fundamental right to food sovereignty.”

Butter lettuce is low in calories but high in essential nutrients. A 100g serving contains just 13 calories, and is virtually fat free. It contains around 95% water, so it can help you stay hydrated, and may also aid weight loss.

The same serving size contains an impressive 85% of your daily value (DV) for vitamin K, which is important for blood clotting and the healing of wounds. It also provides 18% of your DV for vitamin A, which helps to maintain healthy skin, teeth and bones, as well as 18% of your DV for folate, which helps your body to produce genetic material, and is particularly important if you are pregnant.

Butter lettuce also provides some potassium, manganese and vitamin C, and is actually higher in iron than other types of lettuce. Iron plays an important part in creating red blood cells, but it is important to know that butter lettuce only provides non-heme iron, which is difficult for your body to absorb. Vitamin C can help with absorption, so it may be a good idea to eat your lettuce with foods that are high in this nutrient, like peppers or a lemon juice vinaigrette.

Butter lettuce is also a good source of antioxidants, which help protect your cells from free radical damage that can lead to chronic diseases like cancer. Both vitamins A and C have antioxidant properties, and butter lettuce also contains a group of potent antioxidants called carotenoids, including beta carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These substances help maintain healthy eyesight and protect against macular degeneration, the leading cause of sight loss.

Come try some local, organic from ! Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) is a fruit native to Southeast Asia.

It grows in a tree that can reach up to 80 feet (27 meters) in height and thrives best in tropical climates, such as in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Rambutan got its name from the Malay word for hair because the golf-ball-sized fruit has a hairy red and green shell. Its unmistakable appearance is often compared to that of a sea urchin.

The fruit is related to the lychee and longan fruits and has a similar appearance when peeled. Its translucent white flesh has a sweet yet creamy taste and contains a seed in its middle. Teeming with nutrients and antioxidants, you can enjoy this fruit in salads, curries, or desserts and may benefit from its weight loss, healthy digestion, and immune-boosting properties.
