We got some cold weather coming up the end of the week. A couple tips to avoid frozen pipes. Turn your schedules off in your stats, set the temps to whatever is comfortable for you and leave it there. If you have a wood stove or the like, don't use it, let the stat run your heat, idle water in pipes will freeze. With the heavy winds many homes around here won't reach the temperature you set your thermostat for. If you think your heat isn't working go around and feel your baseboards and see if they are warm. If they are the system is functioning properly. If you have warm air, go to a vent and see if it's blowing warm air, if it is the system is functioning properly. Check your oil levels if you have oil or propane, if you're low get a delivery. Pipes can freeze quickly with the extreme cold and high winds. Stay safe everyone.

Good morning! It's that time of the year again! Fire up that heating system to make sure everything works. Let it run long enought so it makes heat, not just long enough to make noise. Check every zone if you have more than one. Then if you want to turn it off again until there's frost on the ground, go for it. This way, if it doesn't work, you can get on our list so we can get you up and running before you really need it.

With the single digit temperatures expected over the next couple of days, don't turn the heat down low at night and don't rely on a pellet stove or other alternative heat source to keep pipes safe that may be in the far corners of your house. These are the most likely place for a freeze up. Any savings you achieved by using that alternative heat source will be gone if you need a service call to fix burst pipes. We see it every year. The central heat will stop working when it freezes; the leaks will show up when it thaws out.
Stay warm! We're here if you need us.

Good morning. For those of you that traditionally wait to turn the heat on until November 1, please turn it on just long enough to be sure it works. Let it blow heat for a few minutes. If it is a hot water system, let it run long enough for the baseboards to get hot. Test each zone. Every HVAC company gets a bunch of calls on November 1 when people finally resign themselves to turning the heat on and when it doesn't work, you may have to wait a few days.

It's that time of year again! Our calendars will start going out in the mail very soon. If you see us before yours arrives, feel free to ask us for one! 🗓

I know some of you like to hold out as long as possible but it is chilly this morning. Please turn on the heat if only long enough for it to start producing heat. If you have baseboard hot water, let the radiators get warm, make sure they all get warm. if you have forced warm air wait until the blower kicks on and you feel heat coming out of the ducts. Once you have done this, turn it off until Christmas if you want. Test it now and if it doesn't work properly, give us a call and we can get you on the calendar to get you up and running before there is frost on the windows and you have to wait while you are cold.

I hope everybody had a good summer. Finally a break from the heat. It isn't quite over yet. My apologies for anybody that got lost in the shuffle this summer. I think I could have kept ten of me busy had I been able to keep up with all of the phone calls. I think I got 60 calls on the busiest day.

Now that it is beginning to cool off a bit, today would be a great day to test your heating system. I just tested ours. Do it while the windows are open and you won't have to deal with that burning smell as long. You know, that odor you get every year the first time you fire up the heat. It also really only costs a few pennies to run it long enough just to be sure it works.

First, change your air filter if you have forced hot air.
Check to make sure your exhaust vent is clear outside in case anything grew near it and will block it.
Test each thermostat and make sure each zone works. Make sure each zone actually produces heat. If nothing happens, check the batteries in the thermostat if there are any.
Check the emergency switch in case somebody shut that off over the summer and forgot about it. Sometimes the breaker even gets shut off and forgotten.

If none of this gets it running, give us a call and we will get you on the list before it becomes an emergency. Don't wait until you are shivering and have to wait longer because other people are in the same situation.

Fall will be here in less than two weeks. Let's be ready for it! It will be more enjoyable if you are not worried about your heating system.

A reminder this weekend to turn your clocks back an hour, and check your batteries in smoke detectors. You may want to check the batteries in your thermostat, too!

Is your oil tank good or is it ready for the slaughter house? Notice that on one of these tanks the oil comes out of the side of the tank and on the other one, the oil comes out of the bottom. If yours looks like the one coming out of the side, your tank is at least 30 years old and you should think about changing it. We install Roth double walled oil tanks with a 30 year warrantee on the tank and a 10 year $2million clean up policy if the tank were to fail.
