We are reminding everyone how to be safe around our local waterways.
Since August 30 CCSO detectives have conducted four death investigations involving bodies recovered from waterways. None of the deaths are suspicious and they are not related. Alcohol and/or drugs were contributing factors in three of the deaths.
Collier County has 150.2 miles of canals and 22 lakes, not including retention ponds or ponds within developments. While the water in canals and other bodies of water in Collier County may appear cool and enticing, especially on these hot Florida days, you should not swim in them. These waterways are host to many unseen dangers. These dangers include poisonous snakes, alligators, bacteria, hidden debris, unseen current flow, jagged rocks, and sudden water depth drops.
Most canals and lakes in Collier have a silt bottom, meaning it is a very fine material and once you step onto it you will sink down until you reach a harder surface, making it difficult to get out. Canals contain water that is fast moving. Fast-moving water in a narrow channel can knock a person off their feet. Even water that is only a foot deep, if it is moving fast enough, could cause you to lose your balance and be carried away.
Canals and lakes can have deep water. If you cannot swim or if you are hurt, falling into deep water could prove fatal. In addition to swift currents, irrigation canals may have undertows and turbulence that could drag even a strong swimmer under water.
Trash and dangerous debris such as metal, glass and even cars can be found in canals, which, unfortunately, are sometimes used as dumping grounds.
Vegetation growth is another danger. Aquatic vegetation can be seen on top of the water but not underneath. It is dangerous and easy to get yourself tangled up in this vegetation.
Agriculture runoff and bacteria can make the water quality unsafe. An open cut on your skin can expose you to potential life-threatening illnesses.
Your best option to stay safe is to stay out of these waterways.
Have a safe and happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸
Rip currents have been deadly in Florida recently. Here’s a good reminder of how to spot a rip current and what to do if you get caught in one.
It is with mixed emotions that I post this.
I’m sad to say that I won’t be able to teach as many swim lessons going forward.😢
I’m excited about my new, full-time job at NCH as a PSR/scheduler. 🤩
Teaching people to swim is my first love, my passion and a gift from God. It is definitely my happy place! ☀️💦😎
But the income was not consistent so I needed a full-time job. 👩💻
I’m happy that I will still be able to teach a few lessons in the evenings, but I’m currently full right now.😊
I’m grateful for the new position at NCH and for all the clients who have rearranged their scheduled days/times so I can continue to service them. 📆🕰️
And I’m extremely blessed to have served the people of Naples, FL for the past eight years. I’ve made so many wonderful friends and acquaintances. ❤️
I’m also changing my business model to “pay by the lesson” instead of “pay in advance for a session,“ but more about that later.
God bless you all and thank you for supporting Tenley’s Aquatics! 🥰
I’m thinking about adding a new service to my business… “beach babysitting” on the weekends for those parents whose kids always want to go to the beach, but the parents either don’t have the time or don’t like to go themselves.
Ground rules:
- Ages 5 to 15 years
- Children must know how to swim or be willing to wear a life jacket in the water.
- Parents will provide drinks and snacks of their choosing.
- Kids can bring their own sand toys or water floats, but I will not be responsible for loss or damage.
- I can either meet the parents at a designated beach or I can pick the kids up from the house and return them. There may be an additional charge if I pick up the kids.
- I would charge by the hour & # of kids.
LMK - What do you think? Do you think this something that people might be interested in?
What is swimming? When we tell children they are swimming, what are they actually doing? Floating on a float, standing in the water, sitting on the step, bobbing in the water, dunking their head, jumping in with a floatation device….
Is that really swimming?
We are using this term too loosely and children are believing us.
Is it any wonder they are sneaking back to the water when we or their flotation devices aren’t with them when we have convinced them that they can “swim” when they really can’t?
What should we tell them instead?
“Look at you, playing in the water! Playing in water is fun but don’t go there alone. Always wait for mommy or daddy to go with you.”
“Mommy/Daddy is helping you stay up in the water because you haven’t learned how to do that alone yet.”
“We are going to go to swim lessons so you can learn how to swim and be safe.”
“You are doing a great job learning how to hold your breath when you go under water. This will help you when you learn to swim.”
Happy Valentine’s Day!
I ❤️ what I do and I ❤️ all my clients!

“Why do you pay so much money for swim lessons?” Well I havea confession to make; I don’t pay for my child to do lessons but personally paying for my child to learn a life saving skill. You can’t put a price on your child’s life.
So what are you paying for…
- I pay for the moments my child doesn’t want to get in the water but does!
- I pay for those days when my child is “too tired" to go to swimming but goes anyway.
- I pay for my child to learn to be disciplined, focused and dedicated.
- I pay for my child to learn a life saving skill in the water.
- I pay for my child to learn to work with others.
- I pay for my child to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don’t get something on the first try and it takes work.
- I pay for my child to learn to make and accomplish goals.
- I pay for my child to respect, not only themselves, but others.
- I pay for my child to learn that it takes hard work to get that success because it does not happen overnight.
- I pay for my child to be proud of small achievements.
-I pay for the muscle memory my child is building in the water
- I pay for the opportunity my child has to be as proud of their achievements as I am.
- I pay so that my child can be in activity instead of in front of a screen…
- I pay for those long rides home where we make precious memories.
-I pay for an activity that is one on one with the instructor.
-I pay for instructors knowledge they are passing down to my child
..I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for lessons; I pay for the opportunities that the lessons provides my child with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their life and give them the opportunity to save their lives if ever in an aquatic emergency. From what I have seen and know I think it is a great investment!
This is a 2 YO, who has had about a dozen swim lessons with me. We haven’t had a lesson in 2.5 months, due to weather, illness, and a broken pool heater, but he didn’t forget a thing!! 😁
The last 2 years have been a bit lean due to my health issues, hurricanes, and other uncontrollable factors. Here’s to a clean slate in 2023! 🥂 I wish you all a very happy & prosperous new year!!
Merry Christmas to all of our clients, friends, acquaintances, and business partners!
Happy Hanukkah to all of our Jewish clients, friends, and supporters!
Yesterday, the weatherman on the radio said that Florida would be warmer and dryer than usual this winter. That makes for GREAT swim lesson weather!! Give me a call to get on the schedule.
Swimming lessons in December??!?
Thank goodness, they don’t look like this!
(One of the reasons I love living in Naples:☀️🌴💦)
Remember: Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death among preschoolers and NO ONE is exempt!
Layers of protection is the key and kids who have swim lessons are 80% less likely to drown.

Here at Tenley’s Aquatics, we are especially thankful for all of our clients, friends, relatives, and business partners! May you all have a blessed Thanksgiving!
What a heartwarming story!
103-year-old Naples woman gets birthday wish: a photo with firefighters It was a dream come true for one birthday girl. Josephine Markell turns 103 next week and her only birthday wish was to have her picture taken with firefighters for her Christmas card. So as a surprise, the North Collier Fire Department decided to take pictures with her. “We wanted to make sure th...
On average, from 2019 through 2021, 80 percent of children treated in emergency departments for pool- or spa-related, nonfatal drowning injuries were younger than 5 years of age. Where known, 73 percent of nonfatal incidents in children under age 5 that led to emergency room visits occurred at a residence, compared to nearly 27 percent that occurred in a public location. Two-thirds of reported fatal child drownings in pools or spas occurred in residential settings such as the victim’s home, the house of a family member or friend, or a neighbor’s residence. - United States Government Consumer Product Safety Commission
Truth! 🤣
