Is YouTube engaging in censorship, the tactic of tyrants, or have some arrogant employees simply decided they are the all-knowing arbiters of what we have the right to see and hear?

It's History Buffs' Saturday tomorrow at Barnes & Noble, featuring readings, history-writing insight, and signings from 1 to 3 p.m. Local author and Auburn High School (Rockford, Illinois) teacher Amanda Becker spotlights a largely unknown part of the city's history in Rockford's Forgotten Driving Park. Rockford Physician Richard F Novak turns historical-fiction writer in An Uprising in Rome 1489, using his writer’s stethoscope to diagnose political intrigue and romance in the Eternal City. Historian Gerard Plecki tells the inside story of the 1969 Woodstock Festival, regarded as a pivotal moment in popular music history as well as the defining moment for the counter-cultural, baby-boomer generation. Come early and enjoy lunch in the Cafe.

Share from Why I Write -- One of my favorite letters, from a teacher/reading specialist in Tennessee after my programs at her school . . .

I'm a blue collar writer, a creator of tools teachers and parents use to make life better for themselves and their children. Though my books have made and topped bestseller lists, this is how I define success.

Researching and writing Warriors Forever was more like discovering a treasure chest of great teaching/parenting techniques than writing about what sportswriters call "one of the most fabulous two-season success stories in the annals of Illinois prep basketball." More is at https://johngile.us/programs/.

The Warrior formula for success #14: Seeing Warriors Forever not only as a great sports story but also as a repository of wisdom for current and future generations is what kept me researching and writing for more than seven years despite being sidelined by open heart surgery, being forced out of our publishing house home of 33 years for a road-widening project, and having emergency surgery for a strangulated hernia triggered by moving and relocating. The legacy of great coaches, teachers, students, and an entire community lives on in Warriors Forever. To schedule a Warrior Wisdom presentation at your school, church, service club, or business, call 815.978-3071 or send your request to [email protected]. Free classroom study guides for teachers also are available.

The Warrior formula for success #10: Warriors Forever explains why some succeed in life while others fail and highlights what it was about the coaches, the faculty, the students, and the entire West High community that created a culture of success. For a free classroom study guide to accompany Warriors Forever or to schedule a Warrior Wisdom presentation at your school, church, service club, or business, send your request to [email protected] or call 815.978.3071.

The Warrior formula for success #11: "Alice Saudargas, the one who knew Coach Saudargas best, said there were three reasons for her husband’s success: 'He was never judgmental. He had a knack for drawing people out. And he never took credit for anything. He went out of his way to find ways to make others the star.'" Warriors Forever looks like a sports story, and it does highlight the main characters' classic qualities which are necessary for success -- resilience, resourcefulness, teamwork, character, perseverance, and a work ethic that overcomes every obstacle and setback -- but it is essentially a showcase for a profound psychology of teaching and community building applied by a diverse group and showing what can be achieved when everyone works together and no one cares who gets the credit. -- JG

"Shopko closes; 15,000 lose their jobs." If the purpose of life, the key to our own happiness, is to do as much good as we can for as many people as we can for as long as we can, we may want to rethink our digital lifestyles and the misery online megamarketers create in our communities. Buying cheap and easy online may turn out to be the most costly and burdensome way of all to shop. -- Keeping First Things First, John Gile (ISBN: 9780910941020)
